Annoying Gas Smell

So I've always had a bad gas smell coming from my 65 that would stink up the whole garage to the extent that the smell would stay there for 2 days after dropping the car off at the shop!

Went EFI, just changed my tank to the Tanks,Inc with internal pump, added a vent from Tanks, put all new braided fuel lines, changed the fuel filler hose and clamps, still using original filler pipe...

Smell is still there! Don't think it's coming from the rear though! My mechanic is investigating but this is getting really annoying now!

Its not your car !!! Must be something else there !!
EFI is a close system and your tank has been changed, soooooo.....

The original tank cap is vented so...

Also what vent did you add from Tanks Inc? I used one that only opens under pressure or high vacuum both of which can only happen when the engine is running. No smell in my garage. I have an aftermarket fuel cap that is not vented, by the way.
 
This is the vent. I've still got the oem gas cap, well a new oem gas cap that I recently ordered and added 2 cork gaskets to keep it from scratching the paint.

Tech suspects it's coming from the front of the car not the rear... From the intake manifold perhaps.... but not sure they are gonna investigate further tomorrow. Hope I resolve this quick, don't want my kids breathing in these fumes!

That is just a roll over vent. It's and open vent unless turned over to prevent gas spillage. Gas fumes escape 24/7 out of it. I will post up what you need to install in terms of a better vent. Have to look it up. It covers all requirements and is designed to work in a return style system like you are now running.
 
You need a proper EVAP emission control system on your car and a non vent fuel cap.
IMHO.
 
That's the thing is not your normal 50 year old car smell. It's very very strong raw gasoline smell. And it's not coming from the rear of the car either.

Hence my predicament.

Got a team working on her in search of the culprit, hope it's an easy fix.

Can you show me where they mounted the valve you got from Tanks? Curious as to placement.
 
With your new EFI system and electric high pressure pump a couple things have changed. The biggest is the inclusion of a fuel return line. While the FiTech manages the fuel pressure in the system the volume the pump delivers will be greater than the engine uses so excess fuel is returned constantly via the return line to the tank. This scenario has fuel being drawn out and fuel being pushed back in all the time. This can create situations of higher or lower pressure and vacuum. The valve I posted acts to balance all this to keep the tank pressure state "happy" if you will. Add to this a condition you will see all the time in your environment, excessive heat which can cause in creased pressure in the tank, and you can see why a simple "roll over valve" and vented cap can't really do the same things. Plus, using the suggested valve allows you to have a "closed" system when the engine is not running. No garage fumes.

Many guys go simple (wrong) and don't add the correct valving as dictated by the design of their fuel systems. They add a return line and call it a day. In some cases it will work ok and they will have no issues but it doesn't mean it's right or safe. Do a bit of research (Googling) about correct fuel system design and you will find quite a bit of detailed info that can explain all this much better than I.
 
If you see the wiring at the back by the wheel well, that's the placement they did. They are gonna try a different location, now I've contacted Summit, they said i don't need this if my fuel filler cap is vented.

So I'm gonna try without and see, because this guy seems to be the culprit here.

Everything else has been checked and sealed off properly. Jeez I hope this works.

Get that vent out of your trunk! It is allowing fumes directly into your cabin. Lucky for you it's a convertible but still absolutely the wrong location. I didn't install one in my set-up simply because there is no good place to mount it properly. It needs to be above the highest point in your fuel system and OUTSIDE the cabin. There simply isn't an appropriate place in our cars. Besides, it's only to prevent fuel spillage if your car turns over. You don't need it.

The one I posted will work for your application. There are others as well for about the same money. Using it allows all the proper pressure control as well as venting which you can route outside the passenger compartment.

I mounted mine the trunk area with a hose routed from it out into the rear end tunnel by the shock mounts.

Wanted to ask, would this work with my rollover vent? Meaning would I connect this to my fuel cell then the line leading outside could connect to the roll over vent valve installed up in the wheel well?
