70_Fastback: RAT ROD - 193x Ford / 1942 GMC Truck

Got some more goodies for the rat as well from the local swap meet this past weekend.

Picked up a complete '65 Mustang steering column (what I was told) with gearbox and everything for $20. This will work perfect for cowl steering. I just need to cut it down to be about 12". Does anyone know how the shaft is connected to that old gear box?

Got a set of the BIG breaks from a '48 ford. Complete swith spindles, steering arms, drums, everything. And these things are HUGE. I dropped them in my 16" wheels and they COMPLETLY fill the inside of the wheel. There is almost 1/2" clearance around the edge. They turn nice and smooth, very clean inside as well. I got'em for $40. Everything is negotiable somewhat.

And I had to have this grill shell when I saw it. Was "told" it was from a '35 Ford. Some research kind of looks like it, but I knew I could count on Pete to nail it down for me :)

This guy was a little more pricey at a $100. (this is the second most expensive item I have bought so far - including the cab!)
But it's perfect - no rot, dents, etc - perfect patina. The geometry and shape goes with the cab so well.

Then lastly I got a pair of wide whites for the front. They were new - but blems. The mouting lip is marred up in a couple of spots where the white is gone. I believe the wheel lip will cover it though. Either way I was not going to pass them up at $50 each! They are tall too. Measure 30" high. They will be perfect for the fronts.

grille shell is a 34-35 chevrolet. any ideas on what you will use for the insert?? strands of rusty barbed wire would be pretty cool...

The shaft is part of the steering box.... The Spear-o-matic.. Remove the wheel and the column and you'll have a steering box with a long shaft. You could cut a section of the shaft out and couple it together...

Thanks for the identification of the grill!

And as far as the insert... I had this crazy idea already... I think I will try to find a couple hundred or so spent shell casings - not sure of the cal. yet though. Drill the bottom of each casing out and thread then onto either some aluminum or steel round stock. Do a small sodder joint of the back of each shell casing and run them up and down the entire length of the shell. So you'll just see rows of bullets basically. It will stay intact with the small military theme.

I have a nice gearbox already from Garner67 that I want to use though. I need to adapt that column to this other box. But what you're saying is that it's a long, 1-piece shaft existing the gear box huh? Interesting. I want to tear into it so I can check it out.

I think all that brass in the grill would look kick arse! With all these gun nuts on here, you should be able to collect the casings in no time. I think I would to the center insert with a larger shell than the others, just a thought.
 
yeah, I think so too. Couple that with the big shells from Skip for the door handles - it should tie together well.
 
Use spent .50's in the center! I'd give you a buttload of .45 ACP's but I reload those.
 
Jeremy, This is what you'll find when you break it down....

You may be able to cut the shaft at the box and shorten the column a few inches to make it work. Install a rag joint at the bottom of the shaft to work with the box you have. Will need to fit a bearing in the bottom of the column for support.

I was figuring most guys probably reload them. I'll put a 'Wanted add' on Craigslist. LoL.
 
What does the other end of the shaft look like - the threaded end? It's is also notched out on 2 sides or something for a stop?
 
I have enough live .50's if you can procure the weapon to disarm them!
 
The overall brass length is 3 7/8" tall, 3/4" diameter of the body and the neck is 9/16" diameter.From the base to where it necks down is 3". I have 15 live rounds left.

your best best on cutting that column down & attaching it to the other box will be one of these:

if you use the DD joints, all you need to do is mill some flats on the end of the shafts after they are cut to length. it will also give you a little flexibility as to mounting angles for the box & column, etc.

I think that's too big Mark. I'm thinking at least half that size. So what range would that put me in?
