70_Fastback: RAT ROD - 193x Ford / 1942 GMC Truck

I just made a 90* fitting welded to a small, drilled, plate. I am going to drill the bottom of the tank and weld my fitting to the bottom of the tank.
 
And I really didn't do much this weekend. I made the mounts for the gas tank and got it all mounted.

I used 1-1/2" x 1/8" cold roll steel and formed 2-piece bands to clamp around the tank. Drilled and cherry welded it to the tank surface. I also welded it to the flanged end of the gas tank to form a nicer finished edge. If you scroll back a ways, you can see how the stock edge on that tank looked kind of flimsy & not very straight. Welding it & grinding smooth made it look tons better.

The band wraps the entire tank and then was welded together to form a single piece.

And a little more... I did a photoshop rendering with the color that I (think) I have picked to powder coat my wheels. I am going with an antique almond cream color. I will also paint the interior portion of the lighting holes to match.

Like the cream color ?

Though I P-shopped in some speed wires on the front, that is not what I will be using. I will use the stock steelies like on the rears. But those are my tires. So it's a pretty fair representation of the final product.

I go this friday to sandblast my wheels and then drop them off with Dan (Dano66GT) Friday evening to have him powder coat them sometime for me. I will then get my new tires mounted & put on the truck.
 
I like the plain old steel wheels myself. I'm a little hesitant on the wheel color though. With the wide whitewall, to me, the combo is really bright to the eye. Almost too much contrast to the natural "patina" of a rat rod. Maybe a shade closer to a camo beige? That might also go better with the military details.

No, they are too loud and it takes your eyes away from the rest of the car, which is the "art" that's there to look at. I agree that the wheels should blend in more. You've put in a ton of cool work to have it upstaged by the wheels!
 
I'd stick with the ratrod theme and have the rims rusty as well. Unless you plan on painting the truck, I'd get rims with a patina on them. You could even put mismatched rims or tires if you wanted to go to extremes.
 
Google any pictures of rats on the web. There is a common reaccuring theme of high contrasting, painted wheels on most of the vehicles. I thought about a more drab color, but didn't like how it looked in photoshop. Then I tried the "traditional" red, bright green, black, etc. To ME, the cream really popped to my eye.

But like I said, the creams, that Dan has available, are more tan-ish and not so bright. We'll see shortly.

Hey J, this is what my brother just picked up. We've been looking at your rat for ideas. What steering box are you using? He's got plans to use a mustang column also.

The color on the wheels looks good......just not on a Rat. A nice gloss black with the hub caps would set it of good and not detract from the rest. You need to highlight the odd things you have done on it. Wait....you would need to highlight everything but the wheels.....
 
Jeremy: screw the others; I like the wheels as you have them. It's your car; do what you want with it!
 
first of all great build! :thu i like the rear wheels with the dog dish caps, for the color i guess i don't like the cream too much if it were mine, (which it's not)..i would go with Flat olive drab green and let um rust a little bit... but im an olive drab lover so :shrug
