65 T5 swap

Hi, new ole guy here from Louisiana. I have a 65 coupe, 289, 4 speed and air which I'm kinda restomoding. I'll get right to the subject, I just converted my 65 coupe to a T5 (1352-249) and I have several ?s. The swap went smooth, for an ole guy, kept the original bell housing, used the adapter and clutch setup, all works good. Next is installing a Borgeson pwr steering box which will not work with the factory clutch setup.
My ?s are
1. what speedo cable can I use or can I replace the cable trans end (the car has 2.80 gears)
2. The pwr steering in forcing me to change to a slave cylinder or a hydraulic throw out

If anyone has done this or can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.Ole guys need all the help they can get.
Thanks

Welcome! Your stock Speedo cable will work, I swapped the T5 in mine, replacing a toploader. I have the Mcleod hyd throwout bearing and really love it. You could always use the Mustang Steve cable clutch or the Ron Morris setup. Mustang Steve's kit uses a factory ford cable, so its easily replaced if anything happens, Ron Morris is a custom cable, $$$$$.

Also attaching some T5 swap instructions, I havent looked through it in a while, but it may help...

Welcome.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. Several of us have made the swap and would be happy to guide you. There are several ways to go at the hydraulics. I don't think any one of us has the exact same setup.

How do I use the stock speedo cable? the tranny end and speedo drive gear of the cable is different from the speedo housing in the T5.
I'd rather not use the cable clutch setup, a hydraulic slave or hyd TO would be cleaner.

The attachment I posted said use an automatic speedo cable. I swear when I did my swap I used the same cable I that was in the car with the toploader. I did replace the speedo gear. Even when I buted the first cable I bought a standard speedo cable from O'Reilly auto parts.

Do you want to piece together a DIY kit, or purchase a complete HYD kit?

I used the stock C4 speedo cable w the gear already changed to match my 4.11's. I do have a Tremec TKO if it matters. (should be the same as a T5.)
I also have a hyd clutch master and hydraulic slave cylinder bolted to the bellhousing.
Makes the Spec stage 3 clutch very easy to push

I just purchased all the necessary parts from Bruce at Modern Driveline. He was very helpful and walked me through the process. I was actually planning on using the internal slave throw-out bearing, but after discussing this with Bruce I decided to go with the external slave mounted on the bell housing. I am not certain what speedo cable he sent but it is suppose to work. You might give him a call and pick his brain.
My two cents!

My 67 has a T5 and my 65 has a TKO both with hydraulic clutches. they are the best!

I don't have PS on the 67 but do have AC. on the 65 I have factory PS and have no issues what so ever.

I was very happy to get rid of the factory clutch linkage! Back in the 80s I had one with a four speed and remember hating the linkage. the headers on that side were two peice ad always developed leaks right at the section that was split to go around the stock linkage.

I don't like cable clutches even though there are plenty f people here that do and Steve makes a good product. I learned my lesson with a Gfs car in the 80s when the firewall split and I had to remove the engine to get it fixed. It was a Pontiac though. I think I took her iron duke and stuck it in my vega and put a V6 in hers. then she dumped me for a Mopar guy. they still have the superbee. Hehhehehe she did pretty good since it is worth more than both my Mustangs put together.

So anyway, your car your choice. I would dump the stock linkage though.

I used the same speedo cable that was used on the FMX that came out, just swapped the gear.

:wor good stuff guys, I was looking to change out the 4 spd in my 66 this gives some food for thought.
