You install a fuseable link (12ga.) onto the end of the 8ga. wire at the solenoid. If it's grounded or broken the fuseable link will work just like the one that's orignal in the engine bay. If you short a 1/0 or 2 ga. cable it would likely start a fire before blowing a circuit breaker that big.

I had a '70 20yrs. ago and was T-boned hard enough to cause the drivers door to touch the steering wheel. Had that been my passengers side and I would have had a hot 1/0 or 2ga. wire running down the rocker it probably would have grounded as my rocker was flat. I guess it just depends on what you consider safe and what are reasonable precautions to take. There's more than one way to skin a cat.
