306 Roller Build

A couple weeks ago I stumbled on a 1986 5.0l roller short block that has been rebuilt. It appears to have new .030 Keith Black hypereutectic pistons (5cc valve reliefs), new bearings and factory rods with ARP rod bolts. It came with a factory balancer, but no flywheel.

I stopped a local race oriented machine shop at lunch and asked about converting the 50oz internal rotating assembly to 28oz. He said that is not really an option as the 50oz cranks are lighter so no way to take weight off to get to 28oz imbalance. Looks like I am converting to 50oz. :( My 289 has a nice SFI rated balancer which I may be able to get a replacement weight from Speedway to convert from 28 to 50. I need to look and see if my flywheel came with a 50oz weight.

I will transfer my AFR165 with 54cc cambers over. It should give me a tick over 10:1.

Cam is TBD. I am leaning to a XE266hr to get higher lift than a Trick Flow Stage 1 with 1.6 rockers. I am afraid a XE274hr would be too aggressive. I also have my info into Flowtech Inductions to see what they come up with.

Intake is a Performer RPM with Quick Fuel 600DP. Exhaust is long tubes into 2 1/2" Magnaflow system with X pipe.

My car has T5z and 3.55 gears.

I considered a stroker, but fear traction issues.

Thoughts, suggestions?

I think you would be fine with the bigger cam. Its still not huge. That being said it will push your peak power to a higher rpm so you would want to make sure your rotating assembly and valve springs are up for it. I made great power with the Summit E303 Plus CAM and AFR 185s. The specs put it right between the 2 you listed.
