Uh oh... the pressure is on!

I am a old fart from the VMF who was just a little slow on figuring out where all the other characters had gone... Hey JohnPro: I'm calling you out for not clueing me in when you PM'ed me on the other board!

In any event a little about me... My father was a Ford mechanic and my first car was a used 67 Mustang coupe that we bought for $300 when I was 14. We spent two years rebuilding it and I had one of the cooler cars in High School (back in the dark ages when cruising was the ticket [sometimes literally] on a Friday or Saturday night).

When my oldest son turned 14, he asked if I would rebuild a Mustang with him like my father had done with me... how can you say no to that? Probably the best thing I ever did as a father - lots of time together getting dirty and staying out of trouble. And when it was done, he loved the car so much he did not want to hurt it!

The 69 Mach 1 in the pictures is for me... I have saved the stock drivetrain and have it stored. The engine is actually a 393W and should come in about 450 HP and 475 TQ. I rebuilt an AOD with internals from a 4R70W and custom upgrades... and I am running 3.70 trutrack in the rear. I am using a custom built 3200 stall speed lockup converter. My intention is to have serious traction problems.

The color is a slight variation on Ford's 2009 "Torch Red" used on current Mustangs. The car should look basically stock when finished with a couple exceptions...

Antenna delete
Black out tail panel
Rear wing and front spoiler
Wheels and tires. I am currently thinking of Coys C-67 17x8 and 17x9 with black centers and knockoffs with 235/45/17 and 275/40/17 tires

I am currently fighting the exhaust setup, after which I should install the lower dash and wiring. Then I can finally start the beast!!!

Progress is slow - I have a demanding job and 4 kids (3 still at home); time with the car not the top priority.

The next project car is for my second oldest son... a 1971 Volvo P1800 coupe... google it! The boys are as different as night and day.

Usually I just call it a P1800 and make people look it up because everyone has a mental image of the "box on wheels" style Volvo. And at the risk of too much non-Mustang talk, at least Volvo is now partially owned by Ford!

To further show my age, I will point out that before Roger Moore played James Bond in the movies, he played a different British agent in a TV show called "The Saint". The secret agent's car on the TV show was (you guessed it) a P1800. Moore was so impressed by the car he bought one for his own personal use. One last tidbit: the highest milage car in the world (with over 3 million miles I believe!) is an original owner p1800.

The pictures above are highly modified; here is a picture of #2 son's bone stock car. 1800cc 4 cylinder fuel injected 4 speed with electronic overdrive...

They made a Movie of the Saint with Val Kilmer and he drove a Volvo C70 in that.
I have a Volvo C70 convertible for My DD, and I get the same expectation from people when I say I drive a Volvo.

Welcome. I love the P1800. Saw one with a V8 in it. I can't remember if it was a SBF or SBC. That will be a nice car for your son. He will have one of the coolest cars at school.

Have ALWAYS thought that would be a great car to modify along with the "sister ship"
2 door Nomad type wagon. Yes, one might want to keep a parts car in stock. There's an original paint one in my area-see it in traffic from time to time! NICE!! Put a little Ford Power in it's veins!!
 
Im just curious, did you or son stumble on this, or go looking for one? I would guess that finding parts has to be hard or harder then finding the car.

I have long thought of these as cool cars... and while running errands with my wife one day I spotted one parked in a large lot. She thought it was cute, so we stopped and left a note on the windshield. The car had not been moved in quite a while, and we had no idea if the owner would drop by. About a month later we were in the same area and saw the car with the note still on it; we stopped at a business next door and asked if they knew anything about the car; they said they owned the lot and knew the car's owner and would pass on my contact information. The owner finally responded and was obviously smoking crack with respect to the value of the car!

At this point I began to search for P1800s and found another one for sale... the car had a broken clutch fork and had been parked in a garage (disabled) for almost 15 years. The pool man who serviced the house had been asking about the car for years, and when the owner passed away he was able to buy the car for next to nothing from the kids. He had the clutch repaired and the car gone through by a mechanic (new brake hoses, minor tune up, etc) and was just flipping the car. I took my son to go see it and drove it home. I still paid less than 1/3rd what the other guy wanted and got a better car!

As far as parts go, the internet is a wonderful thing... you can find just about anything. And there is a small web following with owners clubs that help out too... but nothing like Rick/NPD!

Almost all the service manuals and shop manuals have been scanned and are available for free too...

Holy SHIT! I DID clue you in when I sent that PM. I know Bob says they don't moniter PM's, but every PM I have sent on the VMF for the last 3 months has said that it's much easier to contact me on StangFix.com. I always even put a space in it and tell people they have to remove the space because of the paranoia that has infected the Moderators over there.

If that wasn't at the end of the post, a moderator modified it. Not surprising,though. I think every single thing I've posted over there since late August has either been deleted or re-worded by a moderator.
 
I wouldn't doubt it at all John....Oh, did I say that out loud?

You know we are all being monitored, that is why I wear a hat lined with aluminum foil. They can't monitor me through that! :)

I had never seen a P1800 until Thanksgiving Friday in Kansas City.

A very nice bright yellow one was broke down along State Line and I-435.

I thought wow. What a cool car.

I would have stopped had the owner been around but he must have walked off for help.

Have to add that one to the list of cars I would like to own.
