Me, in the 1 month between wives, late Sept. 1973, Goodyear, Az. 4 years active duty in the USAF behind me and 16 more years ahead.
The car is the first new car I bought. It is a 1972 Datsun 1200 Sport Coupe (rear seat folded with a regular trunk lid). 4 cyl, 4 speed, vinyl seats, rubber floor mats, 4.50 X 12 tires and rims, am/fm radio, no a/c. The stripes and half vinyl roof were done by the dealer. I carpeted it in orange to match and added a/c. The car got weber side drafts, a Thrush glasspack dumped at rear axle, G60/15 Goodyears in the rear with stock in the front. Rear suspension was a set of Thunderbird heavy duty shocks with the overload spring and shackles to allow a place to attach the springs (without the shackles, the rear of the spring sat at the same spot.) and the ride was pretty good. The car was real quick on the street, never saw the track. Did a ton of playing on Central, downtown Phoenix. That car got 30 mpg stock and 40 mpg with the mods and a corrected speedo.
Cost, out the door, Mar. 1973 (married to ex), $2144.00. I financed it at the payment of $75.00/month to get some credit started. Purchased from ABC Datsun in Phoenix. Drove it until late '75 (married to current wife) and ran up 44,000 miles on it. All the upgrades were less than 500.00 with my labor.
That was a fun car but I wonder if I could even get in it now....... Funny thing is we have moved up the run of cars and trucks as bigger/better/more power and are now back to small, economy, 2 door, standard and enjoying it. lol
This picture was in with my inlaws stuff as the family sorted out there property over the years since they passed. Thought you all would enjoy a chuckle......
