Fighting Mad right now

Got a call this morning from my parents that my cattle were out. looks like someone cut my fence during the night and drove the herd out. I currently only have 15 head so a small herd. I am still missing 2 cows and 2 calves. One calf I found is missing its mother.

Called and talked to the sheriff, and I not the only victim in the last few months. They said I was lucky I did not loose more of the. We do have some suspects, just no proof.

The company I work for just did a project for tracking everything in a truck shipping yard, I think it is time to incorporate that technology at the farm.

Thanks for letting me vent. I have already given my Dad my gun safe keys. I think I am going outside and kick something!

Field/wildlife cameras are easy to locate. The other place that is missing 11 calves, lost all the SD cards in their cameras. I need a system that can upload video directly to a server. Now you are talking solar cells to power the remote areas and antennas to bounce the signal back to you server. I know how to do all this, it is just $$$$$ to cover my whole 74 acres. I just lost $10000 in cattle so It would not take but another attempt to cover the cost.

Once I get the bugs worked out. I will offer the how to do it to my neighbors.

I am still pissed, just spent 15 minuets trying to calm my bull. His ear tag is missing. He hates being touched on the ears. He looks like we wants to stomp someone. I gave him 30 pounds of his favorite teat so I hope that works.

Do they/you chip cattle like we did to our dog? Scanners at slaughter houses could then tell if the ones selling are the owners. Just trying to think of ways to track them. Of course that would take major coordination on all parties.

Sorry for your troubles.

I would think putting chips in would be standard practice these days. Not expensive anymore. And as far as coordination it would seem easy to implement if not already in place.

When I first read this I just thought it stupid kid prank but it seems more like modern day cattle rustlin'.

We already chip our show goats. We are going to start chipping the cattle. The thing is most place do not scan for them nor even have a scanner. At least if the animals are found, you can prove that they are yours.

I am going to assume some parameters for the storage of your livestock. Outside in an open fenced field. You are in Texas so it has to be big, several acres.
Video surveillance would be an option. But most likely any incidents will happen at night. So night vision cameras and you get to watch what happened the night before.
Chip in the livestock, but only effective in proving identity if a scanner is used.
GPS each animal. But that would mean monitoring a collar that could be removed. Now if the collar were to cause an alarm if removed then you have real time monitoring.
Run an alarm wire along the fence. If the wire is cut you would get an alarm.

So let us say you have some type of barbed wire fencing to keep your critters in. Joe Bob the cattle rustler comes along at 2am and cuts the fence and loads up a couple of your livestock. But by cutting the fence wires you get an alarm at the house. So you have to throw on your pants and grab your 12 gauge and drive out to the pen. You do not know where the fence has been cut, just that it has been. If Joe Bob is quick then he is gone by the time you find the break in the fence, but keep you the rest of your livestock from wandering off. If he is taking is sweet time he sees your approaching headlights and gets the flock out of there.

So unless you are willing to put the livestock in the barn every night and have some security on the barn. If they want it, then they will come and take it. That is my take as an electronic security dude. I do not have any specifics on the devices that were mentioned. Just applying some things that could possibly be done.

Ford Dude, I have many of those thoughts. Chips are ok but the GPS are the best but $$$$. Like the idea of the cattle going to the barn at night. That takes some training but it is not hard to do. Until I retire, I cannot burden my 85 year old parents with that chore.

Funny cartoon Bobby.

The thing about brands, most sale barns do not check them or for chips.

I talked to the sheriff a couple weeks ago and they let be known that someone called about loose cows. They call someone on their list to pick them up. Since they do not have a budget to pay them, they let these people do whatever with the cattle. He would not tell me who picked them up and when I got mad he said I had no recourse. I told the sheriff that I did have a recourse and I would do everything in my power to make sure everyone knew about this and I would do everything possible to see that he gets voted out.

Somehow my missing cattle are back in one of my pastures today. Go figure. Do not know how but I am just glad they are back. I am still going to talk to the local paper about this legalized stealing policy of the Sheriffs. I still need to get all the facts checks so I do not look like I am lying.

When the cows first went missing in your original post you wrote that you called the sheriff and were told of other instances in the area. Is this the same sheriff who now later told you they sent someone to round up some loose cattle? Seems odd that they wouldn't have put two and two together that first day of contact. Something isn't right.

As far as the sheriff policy it certainly doesn't seem right in that they are giving ownership rights to property that clearly belongs to another. I would think the correct process would be to allow the animal collector to be granted ownership after a period of time if the animals remained unclaimed. If the rightful owner did step forward they should be billed the cost to catch and house the cattle.
