What have you done on your house today?

Taking a week off from work, so yardwork had piled up. Trimmed hedges, vines, dug a drainage ditch, sprayed for weeds and applied roundup to the very back yard which is an abandoned vegetable garden. I had planned to do all of this in early July, but got called to run an engineering investigation that just concluded (most last 1-2 weeks, this one ran 14 weeks!).

Ripped all the old siding off the east side of the house today. We signed a contract to build a new home, should be pouring foundation next week, so we have some repairs to do on the old casa to get ready for market. Looking forward to the new digs, 3 car garage attached to house, hoping we can also build a 2 car detached shop..

Sweet! Congratulations on the new digs.

Why are you only hoping to build 2 car detached, money I can understand, zoning issues would make me think twice about the location, wife approval is a whole different issue. o_O

We'll see when the time comes, i'm hoping for 30x30, i said 2 car because it will have a 2 car garage door. We havent started looking for someone to build it, we know it wont be the home builder. The wife is all for it.

My wife wants me to build a shop. I wish I had concrete experience, then I could do everything myself except the electrical.

Many guys around here have been going with the pole barn style and having floors poured after they do the plumbing and concrete.

I may do that since the permit process is easier.

Just looked at my Mothers new house, yours is further along. Mom owns dirt. o_O She has to sell her current home so they are in no hurry to start the build. She is moving into a 55+ retirement community. Looked at the model and it will be a nice place for her.

Congrats! Where is the basement?
It's weird. I've been to parts of the country where basements are possible but most homes are not built to include them. I can see if you are living in Florida (water) or Arizona (concrete ground) why they don't build them but other places? I don't get it. The cost per square foot is a steal.

I wish we could, very, very few homes in Texas have basements, at least up here in N. Texas. Although, i have no clue WTH we would do with another 2500 sq feet.

Did you see the pics of my basement I finished? If you have never had a basement I guess maybe you don't know what you have been missing. If you have kids lower level playrooms are awesome as their toy messes do not get in the way of your regular living area. Storage and more storage possibilities (seasonal items, etc.) But most importantly, man space! Game room, bar, etc.

I can't imagine us not having a basement. They are so standard up here in the Midwest. Where would all of stuff go? I'm currently starting my basement workshop remodel.

And Terrys basement is my dream basement! It's outstanding!

Thanks, Pat. If you ever head south you are more than welcome to come have a beer or six with me at my bar. That goes for any Fixer.

I was in Chicago last week visiting my brother. Someday I'll take you up on that.

I love my basement. Theater room, music room, study, exercise room and a scrapbooking room.

Also a walk out. About 1500 square feet.

My basement(s) are just that. Plain ole concrete walls and floors. A place to store our stuff and escape a tornado. I see little value in finishing them...unless you have kids. I have no need for "getaways", "man caves" or the such. I'd rather spend the money on track time and Deb would rather travel!
