Does anyone have a Menard's that is local to them? If so might need a favor.

Lowe's has the larger one ($300) in stock at my local store. I looked at it but am on the fence since it is double walled metal vs. the ceramic that the top o'the line ones are made from to keep a constant temp w/o much charcoal used. I just don't know if my amount of grilling is worth more than a $300 grill, neighbor has the ceramic one and it's impressive. I see the ratings for the one you are looking at are good.

Jon,

I have the larger one and am really pleased with it. Very efficient on fuel, stable temps, can go from low n slow to high heat searing with ease, I use an Auberins PID controller on it. I want the smaller one for additional cooks and being portable. If my pockets were deep enough and I had my mind set on a ceramic I would probably goe with a Kamando Joe Big Joe, a close second would be an Primo Oval. Look on http://www.kamadoguru.com for lots of information on all styles of these cookers. I think you will be pleased with whatever decision you make.

Dang all this talk about smoking meat, makes me want to smoke a fattie (pork that is) :thum

Thanks! great, another forum I'll be reading on almost daily while the wife complains I don't talk to her or something :rant I had no idea there were so many choices. I enjoy the research part so maybe this'll tie me up til spring so I have time to save $...
My barrel style 2 section cooker/smoker finally rusted out this winter after ~9yrs. and I'd like something with a smaller foot print that I don't have to watch for flare ups and possibly to an overnight roast in, etc. I hate indoor cooking but outside with a beer I can do.

Glad you found it informative. Another cooker to look at is the Vision, they have good deals at Costco if your set on a ceramic.

I own a Primo XL on a teak table. Last bbq I will own. Love it and it's made in the USA. Even Big Green Egg isn't made here (Mexico and China). Dealer stood by it also, as the lid had fallen off and they replaced the entire ceramic portion!

Whatever you choose, use the Big Green Egg lump charcoal. It is excellent.

You also may want to peruse this forum for ideas, tools, recipes, etc.

BGE charcoal is supposedly made by Royal Oak, they say that on the bag is some sort of RO identifications, I never used it so can't confirm that. I have used RO that comes in the red bag and am pleased with it. Tried Cowboy lump a couple of times and had mixed results. YMMV.
