I have some money coming my way soon and I am thinking of painting the Mustang. It needs it since the current paint is + / - 15 years old. A part of me doesn't want to paint it though because I currently don't think twice about driving it anywhere. I am wondering though if I got new paint if I wouldn't start to worry about dings and scratches.

I was debating on the color though. I don't want to change colors because that would run my cost up considerably.

What I was debating however is adding the stripes over the top or not? I could leave it Candy Apple red with no stripes. Or I could add white stripes or black stripes even.

In a perfect world I really like grey with black stripes but I don't want to pay the extra to change the color. There is a local car with that scheme however that looks really sharp.

Here's how it looks now...

1. Repaint same color w/ no stripes
2. " " " " " " w/ charcol silver or ghost stripes.
My .02, Oh and throw on some NPD removable flaps for stone chip prevention when driving.

Probably a stupid question but what are ghost stripes?

How bad is the paint? What about just adding some charcoal stripes and leave the red for a later date. You get a change and feel good about driving it.

BTW, mine is Nissan Gothic Grey and Hummer Black.

The paint is pretty faded.

Bigger problem though is it has a lot of chips...for example at the driver's side back corner of the hood or at spots on the door. It also has the typical problem with rust bubbles coming through on the front / bottom corner of the doors. The driver's side isn't so easy to notice but it is hard to miss the passenger's side.

I had the roof, trunk and back painted about a year ago. There was some heavy rust in the drip rails that I didn't want to let get any worse. We had to paint the trunk and the back end due to the other paint being so faded. You can tell the difference between the old paint on the sides and the new paint if you know about it and look at it from the right angle but it's not horrible.

What I was thinking about doing is maybe taking it to my buddy's shop and having him paint it and while it's there converting the front brakes to disc for me...I don't like working on brakes at all and would rather pay to have that one done.

Of course, I have to get my under dash harness put back in and get it running again first, LOL!

+1 on the ghost stripes. IF I ever get to paint, that's the way I'm going. I've seen quite a few, ranging from very nice looking to outstanding.

If your already going through the expense of repainting, and you going with a quality professional job, your likely 3/4 of the way there. Why not go all the way and get the color / combo you like. If you like me, you always be pissed you didn't. Hell, you said you have money comming your way, you could just buy petes, he already has your color. You just have to lower the car down, and take out the 4wd. :lol :lol

Seriously though, if you price it, you might be surprised on a complete color change. Especially if your willing to do some of the tear down yourself.

Same color.
GT lower stripe...white

That's a 'CLASSIC' coupe with a classic color.

Would it be a foul to have the GT stripe if it is not a GT?

According to the data plates on the door and apron, out of the factory it was a 289 / 2 barrel.

I can certainly do most of the tear down myself and had considered doing it. I took off the whole front end a while back when I replaced the fender apron / radiator support.

If I find the time I could probably cut out the bottom corner of the doors and weld the new stuff in myself. Or maybe if I find a good deal on great stuff...just kidding.

I know zilch about body work for the most part though. If I knew more about how to do it could probably deal with the door dings, etc also.

One other option that I always thought looked pretty cool is a blue car with stripes...maybe white stripes.

Thinking my best bet is to get the wires put back in and get it running. Then I can take it by my buddy's shop some day at lunch and spend some time kicking around various options and the associated cost.

I vote to leave it be. I have one or two "nice," Mustangs with good paint and clean motors, but I find that I very rarely take them out. Instead, I have a couple of chipped, dented, door-rusty Mustangs that I drive as much as I possibly can--to the store, work, the mall, Walmart, etc. And I always try to get the parking spot up front because I don't tweak about another scratch or ding to the body.

I went the way of just getting some of the bad spots fixed so that I could continue to drive it without worrying about chips and scratches.

My paint is also 15 years old.

I am considering a full repaint a few more years down the road.

I need to have fun with the car before I turn it into something that I would be scared to take it out of the garage.

I'd leave it be and be happy driving it. :D That's why I'm sorta scared to paint my car...I know I'll force myself to do a good job, and I want to drive the sucker. Don't want to be too scared of rock chips, if ya know what I mean.

My vote is to repaint it as is all red, with NO stripes. There is just a certain innocence about a 1st gen red coupe.

Yea but, there is something to be said for a nice paint job, not a million dollar paint job but a nice one. As for being afraid of chips, I don't like 'em, but they come with the territory and they do make touch up paint. ( best of both worlds)

That's my vote too.

That car looks good as is.

Ghost stripes can be cool, they can go awry also.

I had no idea that car looked as good as it does. Aside from 69 fastbacks, 66 coupes are one of my favs.

PM headed your way.

I was thinking about it and I will likely get it painted. Leaning towards just leaving it the red that it is now. I asked my buddy about a year ago and he said he could fix the few dents, fix rust on the door, etc and paint it for $3 - $4k and that was before we painted the roof / trunk. If we aren't changing the color I am not sure we would even need to paint the part of the car where the paint is only a year old...well a year and a month old really.

Started thinking about it and if I got it painted and it were to get a ding it still would look better than it does now. Odds are a lot of scratches could be buffed out or touched up pretty easily.

My engine bay is pretty now since we painted it and redid the motor, etc.

I've never put a priority on paint though...I was more worried about how it ran. I figured if I got it painted first then I ran the risk of having a nice looking lawn ornament.

I've got about six hours of driving to do tomorrow and that will give me some more time to think about it.

My stang is painted in ford bright red. I had them use an omni paint. They said it was about half the cost of bc/cc. They put 3 coats of clear over top and it weathers great. If you want an idea of how bright the paint is just look at a ford ranger or F-150 with red paint. It really is bright in the sunlight. I have got alot of compliments on the choice in red. Check out my gallory to see some pics. or pm me for more. I think the paint code is E-4. Oh, I say no stripes also.
