Water Pump Bolt Specs

While i was in the process of replacing my flex fan with a fan clutch set up i somehow managed to strip the threads on INSIDE of the end of the water pump, forcing me to get a new water pump.

My question is, since my shop manual is useless and has literally like 2 paragraphs on the water pump....i need to know what each bolt that holds the water pump on is: how long, what thread, ect.

back when i removed the old AC unit in my haste i didn't take note of which bolt came out of which hole so i mix and matched and made it work, but i would like to try to put them back on properly this time, compensating of course for the missing AC brackets (which were quite thick) with spacers.

So does anyone have a sketch or something with this info? 289 btw

Thanks in advance.

Just bought an engine bolt kit for my 289 and it had a sheet with the bolt size and length and location used in it. Bad news I left it at the engine rebuilder. It was a AMK kit. Did you check their web site? If they don't have it they may have the sizing at least. Sorry.

The length depends on the size of fan spacer you are using. The bolt should go into the pump about 3/8 to 1/2 inch. If my memory serves, its been a while since i sourced that bolt, I want to say they are 5/16 - 24 and i used 3 inch ones. Hope that helps.

oh i was referring to the bolts holding the water pump to the timing chain cover. but good memory about the bolts that hold the fan to the WP, they are indeed 5/16 and 24 thread

When you figure it out, take pictures and provide the specs on the bolts for the rest of us. I've been in your shoes many times and it's frustrating making several trips to the hardware store. "If" you were putting everything back in a stock configuration it would likely be much easier, but once you remove one bracket.... everything changes. Stock bolts usually become "too long". The big problem is that rarely will someone have the EXACT same configuration as you have and it's mostly a matter of trial and error to determine what fits and what doesn't.

Good Luck!

That's really awesome.....saved that pic. Did you make the diagram or was there some other source? I want one for a 69 351W, of course! ;)
