To rebuild or not to rebuild Fred's MS Box

Good morning gentlemen, two questions. The first is, how do you determine whether your steering box needs to be rebuilt? I removed Fred's (well, it was dark out so Selene's) MS Box and thought it would be wise to ask how to determine if it needs to be rebuilt.

Secondly, if it is determined that it does need to be rebuilt, who would you suggest to do the work?

Thanks in advance everyone

I tested mine by seeing how much I could turn the steering wheel before the wheels moved. A little slop is expected, but I looked at a couple cars that didn't didn't turn the wheels until I moved the steering wheel 3"+.

I don't wanna know what it was like driving down a country road in a car like that. :craz

Most MS boxes seem to need a rebuild, but the PS system takes most of the load off of the box on PS cars. I got lucky and my MS box has ~1/2" play...hopefully, grease and adjustments will cure it. I was thinking about sending it to StangersSite if it needed a rebuild.

awesome question i am going to have the same when i get with jojo...what about a 6cyl box. is it the same as the v8 box.

Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. All 6 cylinder boxes are 19.1:1, and some V8 boxes are that ratio as well.

+1.

He did a great job on all my PS stuff. No leaks even, so far! (crosses fingers)

+3. I think Randy has the market cornered for those who can't or don't want to do it themselves.

+4 for Randy - not only is his work excellent he is nice to work with and honest. I sent in a bunch of parts for him to pick and choose the best pieces from; when it was done he bought the extras off of me and I ended up getting the rebuild for free!

Add me to the list Randy did everything and did a great job. I would suggest checking what his backlog is just so you know what to expect.
