suggestion on headliner

I have a 1966 Fastback and I need to put in a headliner. The shop that did some work years ago put the front and rear windshield in prior to putting in the windshield. I really want to get it done, but all the shops want $250 for the install, but they won't touch the windshields. they want to call in a glass shop and charge me $125 per windshield. That gets the job up to $500.. Seems a bit steep.. Any thoughts?? I am in the Dallas / Fort Worth area..

Its to bad the 65 headliner was different from the 67. With our abs plastic one you don't have to remove the windshield or backglass, and you can do it yourself. Rich.

I have seen it done without glass removal. A buddy has a un-restored GT350 and it needed a headliner and he did not want to remove the glass, the installer just tucked it in and it looks fine.

I'll buy all the beer required..shoot, I'd buy Crown Royal to get this one done..

Any DFW stangfixers up for this one????

I'm game.. I just called Southwest Mustang in Fort Worth and Keith wanted $675.. There must be more to this than I am seeing...

Do you have everything you need? Headliner? New Pad? glue? is the old one still in place? new windshield gaskets? bedding compound?

I was going to head over to Dallas Mustang on Saturday since we are doing this on Sunday...

Old Headliner is not in the car...
I have a new headliner and the bows. I am going to round up all the trim pieces tomorrow..

based on what I have read in the threads, I need the 3M Super adhesive (right??)

You mentioned, Glue (isn'tthat the 3M Adhesive??), bedding compound (what is that??)..

Let me know what all you think I need and I will go get it Friday and Saturday.. What kind of Beer do you like???

3M Super Trim Adhesive is correct.

Bedding compound is used to seal the windshield gasket. It is called 3M Bedding and Glazing Compound.

And the "part" number is 08509. You'll need a caulking gun for it.

Do you have any old windlace laying around? I have a bunch of clips I can bring over to hold it in place if you dont have any. I used contact cement on the edges near the door edges. I wish that fourth link was working it was an awesome article. I'll dig around today and see if I can find a new link for it.

I have some windlace we can use. It is supposed to be real cold on Sunday.. I think we will do this at my warehouse so we can be indoors... We can sync up on Saturday if that is ok..

I assume that you'll be removing both the front and rear glass and installing the headliner properly?

If this is the case, prior to Sunday rolling around I'd go ahead and if installed remove the front and rear stainless steel trim. Depending on the condition of the existing glass weatherstrips you'll need to decide if you want to re-use or replace the gaskets. It would probably be easier just to install new gaskets. If this is the case, once the SS trim has been removed use a new razor blade to cut off the outside edge of the weatherstrip channel so that when Rick shows up on Sunday both glasses are ready to be removed.

I didn't read the linked thread, but a Windex bottle filled with water and a blow dryer are handy tools to use to get some wrinkles out of the headliner as it's being installed. Wet the wrinkled area with water from the Windex bottle, stretch it (more because it is wet), secure it and then hit the area with the blow dryer.

It's a time consuming task and that's why the labor rate is so high. I've done numerous classic mustang headliners and the fastest I've ever been able to do it (by myself) is around 4 hours.... and this does not include the time it takes to R&R both pieces of glass.

The Trim is already off the front.. The front rubber is realitively new, but willing to cut it to save time. (The front windshield is also realatively new). I'm getting my list together and running errands on Saturday....

Todd, Fly me out, first class, window seat, martini slightly shaken and I'll come out to help.
