Strange VIN

The wife is looking at getting a classic mustang (hoorah)...nothing special just a nice driver. We saw one on our favorite sight, craigslist that the pics look good. The body looked straight, decent paint, good interior, radio has been hacked. It looked like a 289, since the car was 5-lug.

We go and look at it...the interior is as expected. The paint was a crappy backyard special...runs, drips, cracking. Then he pops the hood to see motor. It's a six. So, I go to look at the VIN on the fender, and its covered by about 100 layers of paint and can't really read it and no door tag. So, I ask if he can grab the title to look at the VIN. He comes back with a CA title....and for the VIN it has something I've never seen before on a 66. It was all numbers and no letters. WTF. Sabrina is able to read a little bit of the fender VIN, and it appears to be a T-code. Needless to say we ran outta there as fast as we could.

I didn't see anything on the title that said salvage...or any other obvious data plate that had been added to the car, like say by the CHP.

Any thought???

Best way is to go back again with a fellow who's also knows mustangs and have a good look.
What is changed? The spindles and rear axle ? What about the exhaust?Maybe the car is a mixeture of two cars.
But then again , do you like the car overall , is the pricetag reasonable for that car , and are papers / title OK ?
Personelly , if the cars history is a blur , step away from it .

Back in 1976 when we bought this GT500

it did not have a Shelby vin number. We were told that it had been stolen and recovered. The Shelby vin tag was removed from the fender. But the vin number was clearly seen and it had a "Q" hand stamped in it. Q being the code for a 428 8V in 1967. The vin number was on the title.

But your vin number discrepancy sounds kind of hokey to me. Walk away, more will be along. fd

Knowing how the California DMV works, and some people's unwillingness to fight it, it probably got a new DMV assigned VIN because someone lost the door tag. This is wrong, since the official VIN on a '65-'67 is on the fender, but it's probably what happened.

Sounds like too much headache for me, though. I'd walk away.

It's probably a pre-production car...... we've all seen the problems associated with owning one of those cars..... run away.
WAHOOO....I have found car 100210!!!

Ya, we're running away. That VIN is just seems hokey to me. 'specially since I couldn't find another plate with a reassigned number on it. I don't wanna get stuck with that headache..
