Steering column removal 1966

I thought that could just remove the tube off the column to save me from having to cut the turn signal switch. Is this possible? I have pretty much torn apart but can get tube to come off. Am I missing something?

The rubber grommet at the bottom of the tube becomes stuck to the steering box. So if you've remove the obvious (steering wheel, nuts under the dash) then this is your problem. Might try twisting the tube to get it to break free from the steering box.
