Speedo jumping

I know they are not precision instruments but today I took the '67 out for a drive (about 55f) and the speedo was jumping 10mph for miles. Maybe 40 miles in it calmed down to 5mph jump.
In the past I have squirted some graphite penetrating oil down the cable shaft from the top end. But it never really makes the speed reading steady.

Is there a better lube I can squirt/squeeze done the cable?

Have you tried re-routing the speedo cable under the car such that it doesn't make any "sharp" curves?

It should not jump....sounds like you have a bind on the housing or a hard bend on the inner cable. Once bent, it is hard to recover a smooth needle. I have used numerous oils but graphite has been the best.

my speedo was working fine until a few days into the HRPT and it started jumping. Then it just quit. I pulled the cluster out recently to work on the Tach and speedo was fine. I pulled the gear off the end it the cable was broken. The end that goes into the gear just broke off?!?!
Good Luck with it.

No sharp bends. Its been fine for years. Craig, was the gear that broke off on the speedo end? or Trans end?

trans end, it was actually the square part of the cable that goes into the gear that broke off the cable itself

Really now...one should only be jumping in a speedo on the beach...just saying...
