Thought I had an extra speedo cable but can't find it. Question, if you disconnect the speedo cable from the speedometer, can you simply pull the core out? Or is the tranny end of the core crimped or whatever that would prevent this?

I've had other 65-66's in the past, in my younger days, and I don't recall them doing that at all. The fact that I don't recall could have a number of explanations including that they did but I just don't remember. Anyway, it would be great if there was really a fix that worked.
