Speedo cable

Thought I had an extra speedo cable but can't find it. Question, if you disconnect the speedo cable from the speedometer, can you simply pull the core out? Or is the tranny end of the core crimped or whatever that would prevent this?
 
you should be able to just pull it out. I had to replace a broken cable in my son's car and I just slid it out of the casing. There is nothing on the transmission end to hold it.
 
Reason for this post is because of a Mustang friend who's speedo is jumping. Ferrari neighbor says it's symtom of a clogged speedo cable and that the core needs to be pulled, housing needs to be cleaned out really good. Then coat the core with a dry graphite lubricant. Do not use oils......
 
cmayma, let us know if that actually works. My new cable does the Jack LaLane jumping jacks trick on my newly redone 64 /12. I've had other 65-66's in the past, in my younger days, and I don't recall them doing that at all. The fact that I don't recall could have a number of explanations including that they did but I just don't remember. Anyway, it would be great if there was really a fix that worked.

The speedo jumping is definately caused by a dry cable/sheath situation. The cable will bind and then let loose, many times per second, which causes the jumping. Most cables come new, dry with no lube. A dry graphite lube from the top is the way to go as Craig mentioned.
 
Its my cable.

So what to use to clean out the sheath? I don't want to use a soap cleaner (SimpleGreen :no).....should I spray a brake cleaner in there? Anything that could run down the length (gravity) of the whole thing and drain at the trans open end?
 
I'd say almost any cleaning solving such as mineral spirits, etc. Let it drain in a bucket and chase it with a blast of compressed air. Let it dry out real good, overnight.
