Removing Oil Pan on 71-73 Mustang with 351C

Hey guys, what is the trick to getting this damn thing off. I am stumped and dirty. How do I get the crossmember off to get the oil pan off?

I just read an article on this topic. It looks like I have to jack the engine up 4 inches to clear the pan. So the next question. I dropped a nut into the oil pan via the fuel pump hole. Is there any danger if I leave the nut in the oil pan and just put on a new nut?

How big of a nut? Could you fish it out with a magnet and a wire thru the drain plug?

Doubtful that it would hurt anything....but if it was mine, the pan would come off. Otherwise, I would be constantly worried.....what if.....

Well it took a series of 2 magnets. One in the oil drain hole trying to get the nut to the hole, it was too big to get out the hole. Then the other down the top of the pan on the side and that one got it. Fingers are useless now and my hair is pretty much black but its out, the pan is back on and on to the AC compressor. Ford is an ass for making this damn compressor so much trouble to get off.

Glad you got it. My oil pump pressure relief was acting goofy, I was able to pull the pan on my 429 while leaving it in the 67. I had to loosen the motor mounts and I only raised the engine as much as I could with everything else hooked up but it was enough...
you can see in this picture the oil pan is off, I had the whole motor mount off from the engine and frame itself which was a PIA but I was also swapping the headers and had to grind the upper mount for clearance.
Anyway, it can be done. I once changed the main bearing inserts in a 351W without pulling the engine.
