REAR END QUESTION

I admit I know nothing much about the rear of my car. I took it out on the road to test a few things (not ready to give finished photos yet), had a little rubber to the road issue that needs some of your input.
Things I know.
1. The rear is an 8 inch 3.00
2. If both tires are off the ground and you rotate one the other goes the opposite way.

Today I had my brother over on vacation and I wanted to have his opinion on the brakes (they worked great). On my last cul de sac run I sat in front of my drive and said " I wonder if the front brakes will hold a spin"? Get this, I am 48 and this is only the second time I have ever tried this. The last time was with the original 289 and it just sounded different and the tire or tires never spun (dog). This time she stood up and I heard some kind of whirling sound and then let up, my brother said "well that worked" I went around the circle and backed it in the drive and felt happy as hell that 1st,2nd and 3rd gear worked. Brakes worked and the car has no leaks at all.

The question about the rear is regarding what I saw when I got out of the car and saw 2 Black lines in the distance in front of the drive. Being an admitted dweeb regarding never spinning my tires I can not figure out why I have 2 3 foot long identical black lines on the pavement. I thought a regular slip rear only spun one side. Help me understand if this is normal or do I have a little more in the rear than i thought.

By the way it was ridiculously easy with the new engine and a tap on the peddle , no stomping needed. Thanks in advance.

With an open rear end....if you drive straight or back up straight, you can get the gears set so both tires will spin for a short time. It seems they kind of lock for a bit. Any deflection from perfectly straight will set it back to a one wheel peel....I think.

To add to what Pete said, also traction plays a role. I had several cars with open rears that could spin both tires on the right surface like smooth asphalt. As you stated, the open rear will spin tires in opposite directions. I can't believe this was only the second time for you! I have trouble all the time not spinning my tires!!!

Actually I am almost embarrassed to say it is the first time, second attempt. The first attempt was on dirty asphalt the day I bought the car. I have always been a freak about never abusing a car. I remember trying later near the days before the engine over heated and it just had no guts... nada. I think the Ron morris mounts play a HUGE transfer difference as well as the 350 FWHP (small too most of you). The tires are old cracked and hard too. It is crazy fast , I don't even know my car yet... but I certainly plan too :)

OK, I have absolutely nothing of value to add, but there ABSOLUTELY cannot be a thread with the title rear end that doesn't include this:

:bart

Ah thank you.

Well...ah...ha, I just love this place.

I think it special that I , hmmm, perhaps more than anyone here , can say proudly and assuredly that my rear end has never been abused. Nada rearendo abuso.

I have heard that rear ends can leak... but not mine.
I also have heard that peoples rear ends have broke loose... not mine.
What about the rear end hop with no traction bars... not me.
My rear is leak-less and tight, doesn't hop, never loose and has had the same rubber from the day I bought it. My rear has never let me down.

Take care of your rear end and it will take care of you.

I abuse my rear and ain't scared to admit it.

Maybe its time to take the rubber out of your rear end then! :beat

Then you can break loose, wheel hop and have some occasional rearend leakage. :lol :lol

Has this been verified by an experienced operator.... or is this just your assumption?
Well... I have seen a small drip from my rear on occasion, however , when my rear becomes engaged in business and that thing starts spinning that sticks out of it, well...those drips just spatter to the sides. Before when my rear was crusty and dirty it just appeared to have coats of black crust, all moist and dark. I suppose need to visually re-examine my rear now that
i took it out for a spin.

Now, if that was posted anywhere but a car forum.....
