Power top fluid

I have been told that it is OK to use transmission fluid, such as Type F, in the power top hydraulic system on a 68. Anyone done this and had good results?

I haven't looked at my owner's manual lately, but I suspect that Ford spec'ed Type F ATF for the top, just to keep it the same as everything else.

I learned yet something else today. I never thought of checking the fluid. Duh.

My power top works well. Should I crack the resevoir open and check the fluid or is this one those "if it ain't broke don't fix it" situations? Thanks, Jeff

If your power top works well , you don't have to check it because when there is too little fluid in the reservoir , you will hear it and definitely notice it.
Yes : " If it ain't broke , don't fix it "
One thing you can do is to check if there are no leaks at the pump and cylinders.

Thanks guys. It looks like PS fluid is the right stuff.

Ford didn't use any such thing as PS fluid during the 1960s. If it was Ford and hydraulic, it got some sort of ATF, no matter if it was the PS system, pwr top or what.

The GM type PS fluid sold today seems more like brake fluid than anything, I wouldn't want to know what havoc it could wreak on the seals in the pump.

I certainly agree if it aint broke, don't fix it, but the more likely source of leaks are the tubes running from the pump to the cylinders. Mine leaked badly until replaced. The tubes tend to crack under pressure.
