Our German Shepard bloated last night.

Fiona was a part of the family from the time she was whelped. I was looking at her puppy pictures last night. On Saturday we went to the shelter and rescued a German Shepard. She had to be spayed before we could bring her home. She was a stray, so no name yet and 5-6 years old. Maybe today or tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about Fiona, its always tough to lose a family member.
I once assisted in a surgery to untwist the stomach of a German Shepard.
The problem is more persistent in deep chested dogs like German Shepards, on the one that I assisted with; after the stomach was untwisted a strip of outer stomach lining was cut, to make a flap.
In the inner chest wall, 2 small incisions were made to pass the flap through, then the flap is stitched with self absorbing suture back to the stomach lining.
The procedure is called a "Belt Loop Gastropexy"
Not a Shepard, but a similar 'deep chested' dog.

And can be performed on healthy animals to prevent the stomach rotation or bloat before there is a problem.
This condition isn't very prevalent, but you may want to consult with your veterinarian to get his/her opinion on getting a prophylactic gastropexy performed at the same time as the spay.
It is a little more invasive than a spay, but the recovery time is the same whether it is a spay or spay plus gastropexy.

We have had many German Shepherds over the years, this was the first ever bloat. Yes the wife did hear about the procedure to keep the stomach from flipping. She has a little mass on her side that will be looked at and possibly get 2 things done at once. The shelter finally spayed her yesterday. So she came home today. She is ok with the little dog and cats, the cats however do not feel the same way. fd
