Ordering problem with '67 brake calipers

Just a heads up to anyone, to avoid the headaches I'm going through right now. In addition to a complete rollerized front suspension from OpenTracker Racing, I am completely re-doing the front disk brakes on my daughter's '67.

The brake project started when I tried to put new pads in in the car and found a frozen left front caliper. So I ordered a new caliper from Autozone.

Of course, I can't get the flex hose off, and get to thinking, the flex hoses should probably be replaced anyway, so I just cut the hose to get the old caliper off, and order the hoses from NPD.

Meanwhile, I'm not real happy with the right caliper, and decide to order a new caliper for that side from Autozone as well.

So the brake hoses arrive, and I stupidly ordered drum brake hoses, which are 3/8" hose inlet, and the disk brakes are 7/16's. So I re-order the correct hoses, and send back the incorrect ones.

Meanwhile the right caliper comes in, and I mount it. The brake lines come in, and while they work fine on the right side, I can't get it started on the left side. So I pull the caliper off, and discover the inlet on the left caliper is 3/8", and not the correct 7/16". The right side is correct.

So I take the left caliper back to Autozone and tell them that their computer lists this caliper as being unavailable, and it's not the one I ordered. So they order it again. I go to pick it up today, and guess what? It's another 3/8" inlet ... the ones that are unavailable from Autozone, and now there are 2 of them at the store by me. Now sick of this, and going into the 4th week of this, I return the left one and ordered it from RockAuto.com

Moral of the story ... if you need a left front caliper for a '67, don't order it from Autozone. If you need a right caliper, you're fine ordering from them.

I had a similar situation when I ordered '70 calipers from RockAuto. They had the left one, but there was a backorder on the right one. I had to wait a few weeks until they had them available. I would think there would be plenty of them out there, but ??? :po

What you get for going to Autozone:p

In all reality, those '67 KH calipers are worth a fair amount of money and aren't easy to find. I haven't looked for them in a while, but last time I looked when I was at Napa, the cores alone were $250.

The 65 & 66 have the 3/8" hose fitting, the 67 is the same except it has a 7/16" host fitting. I'm getting ready to exchange my 67 calipers with calipersonline.com they have rebuilts with stainless steel pistons and new stainless steel cross line for $110 a piece. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.

Very early 1967's had 3/8" hose fittings, but different style dust boots than the 65/66 design. I had one on Midlife, but the cross-over tube receptacle was stripped and could not be fixed.

I have powder coated originals from calipersonline. Had a problem but they stand by their work. Very happy customer.

I also have a set of new casting 67 calipers I bought locally. Expensive and bot concours but very nice!

That is a good deal, for sure. The Autozone, without the core charge, is about the same price, but doesn't come with the cross over line ... I had to purchase them from NPD.

The Autozone ones are at least rebuilt Kelsey Hayes calipers (Kelsey Hayes is stamped into the calipers). Rock Auto had 2 different kinds. I couldn't tell if the cheaper ones were Kelsey Hayes or not, but the more expensive ones are ... $250 each, including a $57 core charge ... and I no longer have a core, because I turned it into Autozone already. At least Autozone accidentally gave me money back for the core charge they already gave me back. I tried to tell the guy he was ripping himself off, but he wouldn't buy it, so I said fine ... I'll take the second core charge refund of $27 for the hassles I went through with them, so at least AutoZone has now paid my core charge from RockAuto.

Wish I'd known about calipersonline.com before. I'll definitely keep them in mind for the next calipers I need!
