Ordered me a toy from the Matco guy today...

Ordered one of these from the Matco guy today. Not something I really need, but it's on sale right now for cheap. It is something that's nice to have around, though.

I've been needing to get one of these since Autozone won't clear codes anymore. Plus it's a pain to drive a car with a problem just to be told what you need to buy. It takes longer for the car to clear a code than it does to use the scanner to clear it and have the car it spit out a CEL again if the problem still exist.

A scan tool is a must for any tool box. I've got a ODB-II and an older ODB-I. They get used quite a bit.

If the engine run with a computer , you do need to have that tool.
Will come out handy some day.

If the engine run with a computer......

My '66 runs on an A9L EEC. When I made the conversion I wired in the check engine light. The check engine light can be used to pull the codes from the computer.

Would it be nice to have a code reader? Yes, but it's not 100% necessary.

Nice to have a quick little code reader. I have a Peake one, helped me find a faulty cam position sensor on the M5.

Before we took the engine out of the wife '89gt to put in my fastback, we did the paperclip shunt and counting the blimps on the MIL light. That was a pain in the butt to count the short vs. long flashes and long and short pauses. Best 20 bucks I spent was to get a ford reader that has a digital display. Plus it will do some diagnostics to see if there's a weak cylinder.

I got mine at Checker Auto in the clearance section for $18.50! Now Costco sells the same one for a little under $40.00. OBDII, gives you the code number and an english translation, and it clears codes too!
