Need opinions on my 289 build.

What we have is a 65fb,8inch rear with 3.00 gears,c-4, 289 .30 over with stock pistons and cam,stock cast heads ported with larger valves and hardened guides,hi po exhaust manifolds. Now the questions. I have a cast 4bbl intake manifold and a Autolite4100 1.12 carb that the PO sent along in boxes. Do I try this combo or should I get a Edelbrock performer intake and a aftermarket carb,such as the summit 600cfm carb. Thought about finding a Autolite 4100 1.08 to try and rebuild for the fun of learning. Any suggestions? Just looking for a little seat of the pants kick.
 
So your current setup is a 2 barrel?


If you're on a budget, than yes, I'd have no problems using the original 4V intake. I probably wouldn't use the stock 4100 though. It'll need a full rebuild and it'll likely need some fine tuing afterwards to get it perfect.

If you can afford to spend a little bit of money, the new Summit carbs are supposed to be pretty nice and run great right out of the box. The site administrator here, Sluggo, just bought and installed one and he is very pleased with it.

Jeez, the Autolite 4100 is supposed to be the gold standard of easy-to-rebuild, trouble-free carbs that work nearly flawlessly. It'll be a whole lot cheaper to rebuild it ($25) than to buy a new carb.

Yep, I won't argue that with you, but this ones coming out of a "box of stuff" that came with the car. A "simple" rebuild may not be enough. It was I assume removed for a reason to begin with, not likely because it was in good working order.
 
I'd buy the Performer intake, if for no other reason, than to keep from having to lift that heavy as hell iron intake into the engine bay.

I'd be inclined to use the 4100 and rebuild it first. If it doesn't work, you're only out $35 for a rebuild kit. Only problem is that the 4100's don't play well with a lot of aftermarket intakes.
 
If you are on a budget , mount that iron 4V intake and just put the 4100 on it to see how it works.
Its not much work to unbolt the carb again and do a rebuilt.You even learn something out of it.
Provide a clean work space , take some pics if you not sure , and do the rebuilt.
As i see it , a 4100 is worth a rebuilt .

Seat of the pants kick will come from more converter and more gear. Get an 11" converter and some 3.50's in there first, even with the mild engine. You'll see a substantial difference. Build from there. OEM iron 4V intake is a waste of time if you're not restoring the car. Get something aftermarket. Usually a decent dual-plane manifold can be had used for 50 bucks or less. 4100 is fine. You have the larger one.

If you can do all the work yourself (perhaps have a knowledgeable friend set up the gears), you should be able to make some simple changes for under 500 bucks.

I agree 100%. I suggest your budget include changing your rear gears to 3.25 to 3.50. You'll notice an affordable performance increase.

Mine came with 2.80's and I switched to 3.25's. I bought used gears off another forum and, luckily for me, a friend rebuilt the rear for me. I traded his labor for some parts. I removed/installed the chunk and axles myself, which was not difficult. I did a few 'while I'm at it' things like new axle bearings/seals/spider gears.

Although my motor is still a stock 289 2v/Tri-Y's, it is much more fun to drive. I can still do 65-70 mph without very high rpm's.
