My '66 is a California Black Plate car now!

Well, they opened the door, so I went through it. I got my new registration today, approving my black plates for my '66.

My guess is that it's always been a California car, because of the lack of rust it has. But I have absolutely zero proof of this. I don't really agree with it, and I think the Black Plate is now meaningless, but it looks good on the car.

It's been a long time waiting for this to happen, right? Congrats! What's the plate number?

Congrats!

My 66 is a black plate, car but alas I live in Texas. The previous owner had the original black plate hanging in his garage, but wouldn't part with it.

Being from Texas and never leaving, can you explain what a black plate is? and what significance is it to the car?

Car was registered in Cal. during a certain time frame when the black and gold plates were issued. Most look at it as proof of a true Cali. original car. Like a lot of states. they now allow year of manufacture plates.

What sucks about reregistering with the black plates, is that there is now a $10 YOM fee as part of the registration. :rp

Very cool John. With Red being a San Jose car, I've considered many times to assign black plates to it, but the daughter put her foot down with a big "hell no!" She loves the personal plates. Oh well.....

John, do you have the original data plate? If so, what's the DSO? 71 is Los Angeles, 72 is San Jose.

Oh, and we need pictures. You know the rules! :rulez

'63 to '69 was the time frame for the black plates (for cars, trucks used them til '72).

It bears repeating: If you have a true CA black plate car (not YOM), just save an old registration slip that predates July 2009 to prove that you're not a poser. :beat :lol

Does a 1/4" thick stack of yearly registration stickers on the rear plate count ? I don't want to be a poser :)

That certainly helps. :)

Your pink slip will also do the trick, as long as it's pre-2009.

The California Black Plate has lost all it's meaning now, if you ask me. Everyone wanted them, so that there cars could be as special as the others. Well you have to be careful what you ask for. Now they are all just as special, rust bucket or meticulously saved California original car.

No, I do not have the original data plate, and since this is pre '67, you can't really get one, without making up or guessing at some of the stuff.

Oh, and here's the picture to prove it!
