The Reports of My Death are Greatly Exaggerated...
All's well here - with our developed and undeveloped properties.
As was pointed out, the gnarliest of the fires -- the one that burned down 500 homes -- was actually not in the mountains at all -- as it was in the rolling hills (mostly covered with Ponderosa Pines) to the north and east of CO Springs. That is a pretty upscale area, without any terrain challenges and plenty of access roads -- but Mother Nature does what she wants to -- as anyone who lives on Long Island or the NJ shore can attest to- We are just along for the ride.
As I said, the homes in Black Forest are large and expensive -- and their loss is gonna create huge payouts for insurors. I feel yet another insurance premium jump coming. I also suspect our legislature will finally find a way to fund a state firefighting air force, as there were delays in getting air assets... With only 9 heavy tankers, the west is woefully unprepared for another summer like 2002.
I'd have no problem paying a mountain home premium to fund state firefighting equipment, but that's just me. The problem is that the Feds own most of the land here, and their real estate is almost always where the fires start (but that wasn't the case with the Black Forest fire).
Meanwhile, we are getting ready for another anxious fire season, with all our files packed and an evacuation plan. My neighbor and I are working on plans to make sure none of pets of irreplaceable possessions are caught if another fire does occur here. Many people down in Black Forest had to leave so quickly they could not collect their pets -- and the National Guard and Sheriff's Office prevented them from going back in and retrieving them -- so lots of dogs and cats died as well as livestock.
But we are being proactive. I am getting my chainsaws tuned and ready and will be culling and limbing more trees before the really hot weather arrives in about a month.
To those that attended the Knott's show this year: Sorry I missed it. That was only the 2nd time I'd not made it in the last 12 years, but I was juggling multiple crises at the time and knew I needed to stick close to home. I will see you next April.
