Ignition Swith trouble on my 73 stang

Bronx

New Member
sometimes it works fine, other times, when I shut the car off, it won't go back to lock so I can't get the key out, I used a pair of channel locks to turn the switch back to lock, key came out,but not the key won't go all the way in to unlock switch. Is there an adjustment to this or do I need to just replace the switch, and how difficult a job is it??

I'm not totally familiar with the 71-73 ignition systems, but I do believe there is a lock-out rod that runs down the steering column. I suspect yours is either broken or is in need of adjustment. The Ford Shop Manual may give some guidance there....

Mid is correct, The electrical switch part is on the lower col near the floor.
The lock tumbler uses a rod to operate it. Most likely your going to have to replace the lock cyl assy.
Its behind the steering wheel and turn signal switch. Most common problem is the hole for the rod gets worn out and will cause lock ups and binding.

I had a similar problem on my 73 vert after I did an engine swap. It turned out to be a minor adjustment on the linkage between the AT Shift lever and the transmission. I determined this was the issue by holding the transmission shift lever forward (Park position, with good pressure) and turning the key to full off.

by the way Bronx, I see you live in Hastings MN....that's my home town, left there in 90.........

Yup JM, been here since 2004, grew up down in Rochester, before that the Bronx,NYC hence the name.LOL I think I found the trouble with the switch, the bushing that came with the new steering wheel was a bit short,so when I tightened the wheel down, the switch would bind. Found a bushing a bit taller now the switch seems to work, better somewhat. However, when starting the car I have to back the key just a bit or the starter drive stays engaged. ohh they joys of older cars LOL

Simply adjust the switch on the lower end by loosening the two nuts and sliding it downward slightly.
