is it illegal to sell those things? If you don't use them, what's the crime?

Since it's illegal to tamper with a vehicle's VIN..... having a hunk of metal with a VIN on it in your posession would seem to be proof postive that you were somehow involved in tampering with a VIN.

Just sayin'.....

In Ohio anyway, it is illegal to possess a car with an altered VIN, as it is illegal to alter the VIN. It is also illegal to possess a fradulent VIN plate, which this would be, since you don't have never owned the car to go with it.

The thinking behind the sting would be to attract folks who have cars that are stolen and need a clean title and VIN. Arrests for things as seemingly insignificant often produce leads which catch much bigger fish.

As a retired corrections cop....I am still unsure how this would be fruitful. I know some chop shops have used good VIN tags from wrecked cars and replaced them into good ones. Not only is that a plot in a movie, I have read files of guys who have done it.

Playing the devils advocate here, what it the difference in buying a new body and putting a VIN tag in it from a wreck you have sitting under the old oak in the back forty and taking that old wreck in the back forty and cutting 90% of the car off and replacing it with new metal? The later has been done by many and some right here on this board.

I knew a body shop in Yuma, AZ that had cut so much off this poor coupe, it was a pile of scrap metan and a few VIN tags. It had new sheet metal welded on and bam a working running car.

I have to agree, that still sounds like a lot of work for a very little pay off. I can understand the fraudulent VIN plate aspect since the car either doesn't exist anymore or you have the VIN and title to a car someone else possesses. Thanks for that insight though, I always like to hear the other side of the coin in situations like this. I will certainly keep an eye on the local news to see if there were any people busted for it.

I'm with ya Mel, it doesn't make much sense, but legally you answered your own question.....

Legally you can replace ALL of the metal/whatever on a car.... but you can't move a VIN from one vehicle to another. If the VIN tag needs to be removed during any part of the repair, most states require that a DMV official bare witness to the event.
