O.K. I installed a Pertron ix 1 on the car 2 weekends ago and everything was fine...or so I thought. Car runs great. Starts right up and is ready to ride immediately. The problem now is that after it runs up to temp, after I park it and the engines hot it will not turn over. It makes a half hearted effort but it sounds like may a half of a turn and then nothing. Battery is fully charged and it doesn't "click" like a low battery, it just won't turn over. If you let it sit for 15 minutes or so it will turn over fine. Not something I want to gamble with at the gas station or local Bar & Grill. I remember someone asking about hard starting when hot a few weeks ago but since I introduced the Pertron ix in the mix I thought I would shoot out a new question. Should I advance/retard the timing maybe ?? Starter not grounded properly ?? Never had a problem until now.

hopefully someone smarter than me will chime in here but it really sounds to me like the starter headed south and a freak coincidence on the pertronix install timing... it seems to me if it were just the pertronix acting up, the motor would crank and crank without catching

My 429 acted that way. I have a lot of advance. Putting an extra ground wire directly from starter to the frame helped a lot. You could try retarding the timing. The Pertronix might have a different curve. What is your timing set at now?
I run 14 degrees BTDC and its all in about 2,500 rpms with 34 total IIRC

The only time ive had problem like you described it was a bad ground connection. Corrosion on the battery end of the negative cable. wes

Had this issue recently, replaced the started and still had it. It was a bad ground, after replacing the engine ground, I added 2 more, one from the starter mount bolt to the frame. No issues since.

I have seen it be a weak starter more often than a bad ground.....but it is worth the check on the grounds. Check your cables and all connections also.

When mine was doing that, it was a bad starter. Replaced it with a PMGR mini starter and haven't had any problems since.

Check and set your timing!

IMHO it is more likely than a starter. But, it could be the starter, just not likely!

Well mystery solved today. Got off work and fired her up and let run to temp. Turn engine off and tried to re-fire....nothing.. same slow"rump" sound I expected. Retarded the timing slightly and still the same. A little more and somewhat better but still no start. Gave it a pretty good twist counter clock wise and Boom..fired right up. Adjusted it back a little more and now she runs better and starts everytime no matter how hot. Timing WAY to advanced. It is a 351 W. with a 302 cam and I guess that must'a screwed me up. Damn I'm a happy camper. Hate these little gremlins ( especially the one that I produce )

I have one Randy...but the 351 markings on top don't help with the 302 cam. ( trust me I barely understand this that is why I ask so many questions )

On one I had a custom ground cam in I get it perfect and then put a white paint line on it so the timing light would work. the stock marks were useless.

I dialed mine in at the track so when it ran perfect that is where it was set. Never had a problem with it. Well if you call idling at 950 RPM perfect. Less than that and it died due to the big lope and at 950 it was still very lopey!

I am happy for you.

It can't hurt to check the ground strap or even put in a second one.Always good thing.
Timing have to set properly and the marks on the damper aren't always accurate due to shifting it over time.
And a mini torque stater is a very fine upgrade.Less current and more torque to crank an engine with a bit too much advance. :thum :thum
I had the same issue with the fastback and with a 75corvette in the past.
