Fuel Sending Unit

I have a live question over in the shout box, hoping for a quick answer, but I'll put it here too.

Putting a 70 tank in my 66 today and I'm installing the sending unit. Is there a trick for the o-ring? I know what to do, basically, and haven't had any trouble yet, I just want to know if there's something I need to do to do it right, or just lay the ring in the valley and tighten it up.

And does the ring go in dry, or should I oil it?

Two options that will help Steve, if the tank is in the car, use some vaseline to keep the ring in place. OR install the sending unit with the tank out of the car, upside down..its a lot easier.

Thanks! Tank is on the saw-horses right now, so access is easy :)

I put the o-ring in the indentation, and started to tighten it up, but then thought "I better make sure I'm doing this right"

So the vaseline helps with the "in car" installation, but no lubricant required if the o-ring stays put.

Correct, the vaseline helps keep it in place. what you may want to do is get everything together and put a measured amount of gas in the tank before you install it so you can see if you need to adjust the sending unit float. Plug the fuel line and run a wire to the sender and see if it reads correct on the gauge.

Once you have, or had fuel anywhere near the tank, DO NOT use anything that will create a spark when you put the ring in there......obvious reasons..

Nevermind my pm. Didn't see this first and realize you had the tank out. No lube. Referring to Rick's suggestion, if you're not sure what to use after fuel has been in, take a flat head screwdriver and put a little duct tape on the end, flat head end. Tap with a hammer to tighten.

Thanks for the help, all. 1 more quick question. I'm out with the family and stopping by the autoparts store on the way home. I forgot to grab the fuel hose that connects the sending unit to the fuel line. What size is that hose? 3/8?? Thanks
