Forgot to polish out my drip rail mouldings -update...installed pics

Here I thought I had already removed the dings and polished them out back when I did my window trim pieces. Yesterday my painter called saying that he could come up to my place and install them. Something told me to go look at them. Upon grabbing them, it was obvious I forgot to restore them some time ago. Had to cancel the painter's visit yesterday and instead spent 3+ hours restoring them.

Banged out the worst dings, followed by:

fine file work
220grit
400 "
600 "
1000 "
1200 "
1500 "
2000 "
Polishing wheel

Now I have to take them and Shag down to the painter tomorrow. Next time I need to be ready.

Re: Forgot to polish out my drip rail mouldings

Will shoot a pic after install tomorrow.

Re: Forgot to polish out my drip rail mouldings

Will believe you straightened them and polished them after tomorrow.

Shag and I just came back from my painter who installed them. Though he made it look easy, I'm glad I did not take this project on, though now I feel pretty comfortable in doing it after watching his method.

Have you done any work on that car yourself?

Come on man, you need to farg some stuff up so the rest of us don't look so bad.

Door panels, adjust the hand brake cable, fill the ice cooler with beers & spank the wife. Then I'm all done. Actually I lost all 32 door panels clips so today while at the body shop, I swung by a local Mustang shop and got them. So today/tonight on goes the water shields then panels.

Will you be taking Shag around the Country so we can all admire it up close?

You guys do realize that this 'Shag' is a 1/24th scale model right? :lol :lol :lol

Nah...Craig has done a great job working on Shag by himself. He may have gotten writers cramp from check writing but that was for the parts that he built Shag with.
Its a very complete rebuild. :pbj :pbj :pbj :pbj

I know you didn't put the drip rail on but maybe you could just do a write up on how he did it for the benefit of everyone? Did you have any pictures you could post of the install? Thanks Craig

I did not take any pics for I was asked to help install them. Though I did mention front edge moving towards rear, let me go further into detail for actually we first made sure the front end would clear the door. Holding that position in place, we then visually checked to see if the corners of both molding and drip rail were in line. Once we felt comfortable we started at the upper front corner and rolled the molding place via upper edge in place and then with our palms rolled the bottom edge over the drip rail. Followed by a soft mallet and paint stick. Then moved from front corner to rear corner, twisting, lifting and rolling the molding over the driprail from top to bottom. Again followed with mallet and paint stick.

Finally went from rear corner down to the lower rear end.

Sorry if the above is confusing but we basically hooked the upper edge of the molding into place and then using our palms, rolled the molding bottom edge over the the bottom edge of the drip rail.

*Note: once in place, the sound it makes with the mallet and paint stilck is very distinctive. A very solid sound as compared to it not being in place.

Thanks Craig, nice description, I can picture it, but not to beat a dead horse, how did you get them off without mangling them?

I don't remember using any tool even a church key. Just careful brute force with lots of twisting.
