News of the upcoming pony car comes from an interview with J Mays, vice president of Ford's global design and chief creative officer, at the Paris Motor Show. He fielded questions from Ford's Facebook page, giving hints as to where the next Mustang's styling is headed. Unlike the 2010 Mustang, which was an evolution of the 2005 car's retro-styling, the 2014 Mustang will be "a jump forward." We're not exactly sure what Mays means by "a jump forward" in terms of styling, but it's clear he still wants to draw inspiration from the Mustang's past while presenting a clear future for the car.
"We can't lose the Mustang DNA, which is really important, but we've got to signal that Mustang has got another 50 years of life left in it," Mays tells the camera. "In order to do that we are going to have to take a bit more of a stretch with the car, bring all of our Mustang faithful along with us..."
Ford wouldn't comment further on the next-gen car, but we can't help but wonder if the 2014 Mustang might finally break from its solid axle roots. Of course, the current Mustang is no slouch at the track with impressive handling capabilities, but we still imagine there's even more lateral grip and ride refinement to be had with an independent rear suspension. We imagine that direct-injection and Ford's PowerShift dual-clutch transmission could also take their places on the next Mustang.
The 2014 Mustang is still roughly three years away, but we're already eager to see what Ford has up its sleeves. But for now, you'll have to do as J Mays suggests in his video and "stay tuned."
