A belated intro. With pics, to obey both rules.
Hello, my name is Andre and I have a ‘Stang problem. Man, do I feel much better.
I got the stang fever early in life, my first car was a 1967 6 cyl coupe. Good paint & body, but the engine was shot. Rebuilt it, dropped in a 3.25 diff from a manual trans car, and it was a pretty quick little machine. Any more engine and it would have been trouble for a 17 yr old kid. Also did lots of cosmetic stuff – new seat covers, headliner, cleaned & repainted under hood, grill, etc. Killer stereo, of course (by 1979 standards). Lots of good times working on that car with Dad (although I didn’t realize it at the time). :coo
Went away to college, and loaned it to another car guy friend of mine (we were building his 350, and he had a hot date). I rode 3 hours back to the ‘rents with my Uncle, went out with the friends, and came home to mom & dad waiting up.
Oh s%$t; I start the run down of the list of infractions. Then they tell me the car is gone. Apparently in 60 seconds: My friend parked it right in front of the movie theatre box office, and when the movie was over, the car was nowhere to be seen. Never heard from again. After the work I’d put in, I wasn’t in the mood for a Mustang project again. Bought a Datsun. Worst automotive mistake in my life.
About 3 years later, I bought another 67 – this one a K code for $1250. Built the engine, paint, new bumpers, headliner. Managed to meet the rear of a Lincoln at 35 mph. College kid with no money, I learned body work real quick. Also learned to paint then. Opportunity in every problem.
Drove the heck out of that car in college. Love to say I still had it, but when I got out of school, it had no air, PS, PB; worse, I lived near a lake and it didn’t have a trailer hitch. Did I mention I had also figured out ladies love boats? And a/c?
Sold it for $3500, which at the time (1987) was pretty good, since it had significant frame rail rust. Selling it would have been the worst auto mistake, but there were lots of lake days and bikinis that mitigate the mistake. :ep
Current project is a 68 Mustang that belonged to my Dad. He bought it in the late ‘80s for my sister to drive, but not keep (Stang fever must be hereditary). I got it after he died. It unfortunately sat under a car cover for a few years while he was ill and has surface rust everywhere. I’m the 3rd owner, just 105k actual miles. It sat in my garage for almost 8 years before I started working on it.
Side view – body is straight, except for a bump on the Qtr.
Most work to date has been reliability and safety – complete brake rebuild (upgrades later), fuel tank & lines, wiring rebuilt & upgraded, new 3G alt, electronic ignition, custom DIY LED sequential taillights & LED parking lights, halogen headlights w/ relays, working on new fuses & circuits now.
Wiring – tried to upgrade w/o looking like a complete upgrade. Real power feeds (not the stock whimpy 12 ga ); kept the amp gauge working with suitable conductors to handle the 3G output. Added circuits for future upgrades. Junction block is from a ’60 Ford Truck, alt from a ’94 Taurus.
New Summit carb & duraspark dist. – quick cranking, great idle (if you ignore the blue smoke).
Only one real structural rust issue – the roof under the vinyl has spots 4-6 inches rusted out. Replacement will be the biggest single project. One floor board has a little rust through, and the usual front of the doors and rear wheel wells have just a little (patches will do it). But surface rust on everything from the bad storage; lots of wire brush and rust bullet required.

Goal is to have a reliable daily driver/partial restomod, so planned projects are:
Arning drop, rebuild front end – will determine if R&P upgrade instead of the stock PS when I take a good look at it.
New ’97 5.0 being rebuilt
Eventually want to do a megasquirt EFI install
4R70W trans upgrade w/ 3.5 gears (likely keep the 8 inch, planned max HP is <350)
Subframe connectors
Wheels, tires
Front / rear disk
Needs stripping, paint & all new trim
And I’m sure lots of “while I’m at it� projects.
