I have only had one FMX and it was in a car I bought for parts. I can't say they are not better but C4's have much more support in the aftermarket. They can be pretty tuff but need some modification for serious abuse."jmbour66" said:Any opinions on which is better: C4 (1973) or FMX?
The FMX was the standard transmission behind the 351W in 1969, and I believe it was used extensively in later Ford products behind the small blocks. The early 351Cs had a C6 behind them IIRC."Ponyman66" said:I honestly don't know if an FMX will bolt up behind a small block. IIRC it'll bolt to a big block or (at smallest), a 351C/M. It really was never considered to be a performance tranny. AOD's are another good choice, but just like a C4, they can be built to hold some pretty good HP, but need work to do so.

If it were me, I'd go with the AOD before I beefed a C4. Three speed trannys limit the rear gearing you can practically run with on the highway. My convertible has a C4 with 3.55 gears and turns around 4K at 80 mph. My son has a SportsRoof with an FMX and 3.73 gears and it howls at highway speeds (the engine, not the gears). Nearly undriveable, and the gas mileage on both cars sucks.

How's life in Lincoln? Until two years ago, I had a dear cousin that lived there and I remember visiting her and JohnPro the same day, just a few months before John was diagnosed. Unfortunately, both of them are now gone. :shrug
