Fan clutch and fan choice.

I have a 65 fb which I hope to put the engine in this spring. So this goes under the parts gathering mode. Fairly plain 289 with bigger valves, alum intake, 500 cfm carb and hipo exhaust manifolds. Don't want to mess with electric fan so I was thinking thermostatically controlled fan clutch and what ever the standard configuration fan is. Can any one tell me the year and model any of this came on so I know what to search for? Anyone running this good or bad? Same general question about the starter. Is there something better ( less weight/ more torque ) that fits a 289 and isn't out of line in price? Thanks for your input.

Hi, I'm also staying clutch fan on my 289, rather than hunt down salvage parts I bought a new 6 blade fan and thermostatic fan clutch, was afraid I'd end up with a bent fan or loose rivets and end up ruining my radiator. You can get quality stuff from Summit, Jeg's or your local parts store, I looked for Hayden or Flex-a-lite.
What size fan can you fit - 16, 17"? and do you have a fan shroud? (improves fan efficiency and effectiveness).

Here's a couple examples:

I've got the standard reman. starter on mine and haven't researched alternatives other than high torque that are >$100. Good clean ground and fresh cables add a lot to starting power.

I'll 2nd Jon's reccomendations for the fan and clutch...I've been looking at a setup like that and didn't realize you could get a clutch unit for less than $50.

For the starter, Ford used a hi-torque ministarter on a TON of V8/V6/I6 vehicles from 1990-2003 that should fit. They are everywhere at the junkyards. :D
