Fan and hose

Just a reminder that your fan and radiator hose don't work and play well together....sort of like your battery and fan don't play well together huh Duane?

I'd recently started hearing something rub against the fan on a fair to hard acceleration. Just the last time or two that I had taken short drives. Looking around I couldn't figure out what it was.

Also had the recent issue with the car overheating.

I have been working this weekend on replacing the water pump. When I took off the upper hose I found what's in the attached picture. Probably lucky I didn't get stuck on the side of the road somewhere.

I remember when the engine guy came over to look at the rear main with me a while back he had noticed the fan would wiggle a little...guess the old pump was getting some play in it? It had clearance (though not much) when it was just sitting at idle. The pump was getting pretty old, I replaced it with one of the high flow pumps from Summit.

On the plus, the shaft on the new pump sticks out a good 1/4 inch further and the new upper hose seems to travel a different route so after putting the new pump on I have more clearance between the two.

Started the pump replacement on Friday then got sort of side tracked and just finished up the install this afternoon.

Yeah, good catch. I had a "metal rubbing" sound at higher rpms in my old truck one time. Of course it was only at higher rpms. Pulled over, cut the truck off, and just started checking everything. WP was pretty much shot like yours and it had developed so much slop the fan was actually hitting the radiator. No damage but could've been bad.

The install seemed to go fine. Got the last of it hooked up this afternoon and let it run at idle for about 10 minutes.

While it was running looked it over with the work light and no leaks (always a plus). It got up to running temp but not too hot so one would assume the water pump is working like it should.

I would say I don't know why I didn't replace it before now but it took several hours....the pump itself is easy but you have to take pretty much everything off the front of the motor to get access.

Considering it's hot as heck outside...yeah, I can see why I put it off, LOL!

Have you checked your motor mounts? Assuming the fan fits properly, a loose motor mount will allow the motor to rotate enough to cause fan/hose interference issues. Ask me how I know:(

I haven't checked but I will. We just installed the motor last October and all has seemed well up till now.

Before there was very little clearance between the hose and the fan. That's fixed as part of replacing the pump.
