Door Panel Clips

I’m finally installing my new door panels. I don’t know which clips to get. Mine are the DeLuxe panels, but I don’t think that actually matters for ‘68 (uses the same clips as standard panels).

I’ve seen clips with foam and clips without foam. I see Deluxe clip kits and standard clip kits. I pulled an original ’67 standard door panel and found foam clips along the bottom, and non-foam clips everywhere else.

I’m trying to figure out which clips to get and where they go. I used to think one clip was used everywhere, but it now appears to be a little more complicated than that.

I would use the foam clips, no rattles!

I have used them both in both top and bottom. They seem to be interchangeable, but the foam clips help your panel to be tighter to the door without rattles.

I used the steel clips I got from KAR Mustang in Columbus Ohio. I found that I had to open the slot that slips into the hole on the door panel just a bit. Be careful when you put the clips on, because you can run them through the fabric on your panel. Line the panel with installed clips up to the door, BEFORE you are ready to actually install the panel. Once you get the panel on, DO NOT use a tool to try to pound on the panel to get a close fit. It will force the clip through your panel fabric. You may have to just use another clip if you don't get the fit you want.

Most everything I know about Mustangs comes from trial and error experience. I hope it helps you some.

This was asked on the VMF Concours forum. The padded clips are supposed to go in certain places, but I forget exactly where! Try and search that forum for details or go to http://www.concoursmustang.com/ and ask there.

This is a SWAG.

I think the foam ones go wherever the clip will contact metal without any barrier such as the water shields.

I'll add that I don't think it matters if you use the foam ones exclusively. Particularly if you are not worried about concours.

Doh! :doh

I should have known better than to ask such a basic question without doing some searches, first! My apologies.

I even have the assembly manual that reportedly shows me which clips go where. I still wonder why the two types, the purpose of the foam, and why the placement scheme.

I ordered my clips a long time ago from NPD. I remember asking the salesman about which kit to order and he steered me to the wrong one. What I got was a bag of 15 no-foam clips. I called and was told that was for two doors. Well, after attempting the install, I figured out that not only did I not get enough clips, some of them were the wrong type.

I guess I'll just scare up enough used clips to get my car back together and say "oh well" to the foam issue. I'm not willing to place an order for another clip kit, wait a week for it to arrive, and pay more in shipping than the clips cost. NPD's customer service is great, and they'd probably help me out, but I'm not going to be "one of those customers".

If and when I find myself in the market for more parts, I'll order a correct clip kit and have it on hand for when I have to pull my panels - that seems to be inevitable on these cars.
