Custom throttle linkage ..help!

I got all the stuff to make my own using this how-to article: Make your own: Custom Throttle Linkage

I did as the article said for how to measure the length and it seems like it's too long. In the pictures (yeah those can be decieving) on the article, it doesn't look as long as the one I made.

Does that seem right... close to 15 inches from end to end???

Use the one you removed to compare. If the old one worked.....make the new one the same.....

The old one was WAY too short causing the gas pedal to be like 4 inches off the floor. That guy who tried trading carbs with me... cut it down to fit the edlebrock so when I put the holley back on, was no longer the correct length and he can't remember how much he cut off. :sad

don't try this too often as it will flood the carb, but have hubby mash the pedal to the floor and you look and see if the butterfly's are all the way open. If they are you were successful.

If that does not work, make one out of a wire coat hanger. Adjust it to work, then complete the new one.

Kat,
Are you saying that the arm is not short enough? No biggy if you have a die to cut more threads. Also make sure the air cleaner, when in place, is not touching the top of the throttle arm. That is a problem I had with shag so I had to bend the arm downward in the center to clear the lip of the air cleaner. When you get done, it would be wise to have some extra threads cut so just in case you need to shorten it a little bit more, you can.

dont let this hiccup get you distracted kat....good job on making the linkage. where did you end up getting all the parts at ..

pete and the 2 craigs got it right and might just need to readjust and the coat hanger is an awesome idea

TCP throttle linkage I have is ~11.25" end-to-end of the heim joints and ~9-1/8" length arm. Call TCP Tech for measurements. Where did you get the parts?! I like doing that kind of stuff...

Thanks. It's annoying trying to get it just right, but take a little off at a time and eventually I'll get it. Think I'm pretty close now. Cut off 2 inches so far! I checked every closet in this house and not one stupid metal coat hanger. :amaz

I got the parts from local hardware stores - Ace Bolts and Grainger. The hardest thing to find was the heim joints. NO ONE had any fricking clue what in the heck I was talking about. Took me checking 5 or 6 stores to find them at Grainger.

Kat,
When installed make sure that the linkage is free in movement. Meaning that it should pivot sideways when you twist the arm. Sometimes it is required to put a washer between the heim joint and the arm it is connected to.

I got washers with rubber backs on them. :)

Well I think I finally got it. :vic Started her up, seems everything is working as intended. Gas pedal is not too high either and feels right. I only cut the threaded rod down. Tomorrow I'll recut the brake line sleeve so it fits to cover the threaded one. I'm tired and need dinner finally!

This is exactly what I wanted to do. I was at lowes the other day and I couldnt find the heim joints, I never even thought about grainger, I will be going there tomorrow.

Thanks Kat, yours looks great!

Looks good Kat. Did you verify that the throttle is pulling to wide open when floored? I have had some that there was a difference when the pedal was pushed vs the throttle actuated by hand under the hood. Also, the position may have to be changed when you install the carpet.

I never can find a damn wire hanger when I need one either.

I normally do the rod as pictured below. Still have a hard time finding the those ends pictured. This is one of the older ones I did. Gotta start trying to find the ends again for this car.

I did. I had hubby help for that part to make sure everything was correct. I also tested it out this morning and drove around. Seems to be working good.

Check for a Grainger store or you can order online parts online as well. They have the threaded rods & the heim joints. That's where I got mine. If you want, later when hubby gets home from work, I can give you the discount code (like 12% I think off the purchase). If you pay with a credit card you get free shipping. Atleast we did, but I don't know if it's because we ordered it from the store itself. Only took a couple days to get. Ordered the threaded rod Friday, got here Monday.
