I cut out these custom tail lights. I intended to make them flush mounted and have one face left and one face right. I have been sitting on them for a while and now I am starting to get second thoughts about them. They are small enough that I would be able to cover them with the stock covers if it came down to it. I am thinking about resale and trying to decide if they would be a good idea or just tacky. Since its a 65 coupe I wont have any back up lights either.
I would like your honest opinions and if you have a different idea for a tail light I am all ears. I am also considering flush mounting the 3 bars on either side to stick with the brake light look but get rid of the gaudy light housing.

my rule of thumb when doing custom work is: " if i still have the car in 5 yrs, will i wish i hadn't done this??" i try to do things that are "timeless" & won't look dated in a few years, especially with color selection (remember all the pinks & baby blues in the late 80's??). if you like em' go for it, they look really cool & unique.

I'm not really into that look, but if you could find a way to put the running horse inside the original tail light housing, that might look cool. You'd only see it when the lights were on.

If you make it a bolt-in affair, you can always pull them for the factory units if you change your mind later. Or it might look neat on a smaller scale if you were doing a third brake light.

I did think about installing them in an actual housing. I just wasn't sure how it would look black. The car will be black with all the badges removed and the only visible chrome on the car will be the wheels. until you pop the trunk of course. I may look into that idea again if I don't get any better ideas.

The idea is growing on me a bit. If you do mount them, I think you will need to do something with the fuel filler also. I believe having flush mounted lights will look off with a gas cap sticking out in the middle. You could do a coral around the horse and set it up in clear for back up lights.

I have thought of flush mounting the tri bar light style but feel the bumper would also have to be cut for a tight fit and painted to match the car. No chrome around the light with the bumper in tack would look odd...in my opinion.

I think it would look absolutely ridiculous.

I'd run no lights at all with the tailight openings welded smooth before I ran with those ponies.

What if he did three on each side and had them wired sequentially, so it looked like the horse was running???

Personally, I think it would make the car look a little Ricey.

What if he did three letters on each side.... G A Y and had them wired sequentially?

Fixed it for you.

IMO, the Mustang tailight isn't something to "play around with". The three vertical bar designed light exemplifies the Mustang and has been used on every iteration of body style since 1964.

:lol :lol :lol Thanks Dave!! That's much better!!! :lol :lol

I guess if you count the back up lights and reflectors.....83-86 LX Fox's, 71/72/73's, 94/95's.....no vertical 3 panels. I may have missed some....

Just pullin' your chain Dave. :lol :lol :lol I do agree the tri panel taillight says Mustang...period.

Here is another option for you Tony if you decide to put the lights on. Since you are going to paint your car black perhaps you should paint the taillight lenses with that smoke paint so that they blend in with the body. When you put the brakes on then the horses light up. Overall I am a bit torn on the idea and have been for some time. I wouldn't put them on my car but they may look fine on yours with the degree of other body mods you are doing.

I wouldn't go with them...not as tailights. Headlights...maybe....lol...just kidding. :craz

I do like the idea but I don't think using it in the tailights is the best place for it. Maybe make it smaller and instead use it as a flush mounted 3rd brake light in the middle of the trunk lid. Tint the red dark so it blends in with the paint color until it lights up. Then also design a flush mount for the three bar tailights and do something with the fuel filler so you can flush that as well. Tint all the red and I think it could look sweet.
