did any mustangs ever have column shift??? i sold a mach 1 to a guy and now hes trying to say the column that was in it, was column shift but i have no idea and thought id check here to see if anyone knew what he maybe talking about

Sure as heck if I say there never were any, someone will post a picture of one. But, as it stands I do not believe there were any produced that way.

I think even the bench seat mustangs were floor shift. I have never seen anyone from the factory that way. A Mach with a column? The guy is on Crack! Never!

Nope. Not on a mustang. There were some other muscle cars with column shift for automatics which I always thought was dumb. Probably if it did have a provision on the column for a shifter someone else had switched it out previously from some other car....but why?

thats what i was thinking... the guy said hes going off of his experience with other makes and models that had column shift. i dont know enough to argue but if anyone has some picture i can send him to show him what it really is post them up... his argument is theres a bar hanging of off it close to where it connects to the steering box and a hole on the interior.

Those would be the indicators of a column shift. Have him send you pics so you can see if it is true AND on the car you sold him.

BTW, is he wanting you to pay for changing it or what?

Well, they missed getting in the post but I looked at them above. That is a column shift type column. What is the guy wanting?

no idea... he just called and told me about it and ive never heard of column shift mustangs. i pulled a column out of a coupe for my project mach and its got the same stuff... did i have the two rarest mustangs in the world... the only mach 1 and the only coupe with the column shift?? now this guy owns them...darn

Yep, real rare for sure. Some PO must have had a deal on old columns and was converting to something with other options or he had some weird ideas for putting in a column shift.

That hole in the column is there on both my 70 mustangs, as well as the rod on the firewall side. The rod is the lockout rod. You don't have a column shift car, its just the way they were made.

Here is one from a Cougar that has the same hole. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/69-70-COUGAR-STEERING-COLUMN-MUSTANG_W0QQitemZ260577114117QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3cab9b3805

If it were a column shift it would have linkage for the shift to mount to the column, as well as a connection point at the hole for the shifter.

Ford was well known for using what it had on hand when necessary. Falcons (& other mid sie Fords) came with column shift. Maybe they just ran out of the non-column shift that day. Wouldn't be the first time they subbed some other part :craz

Hmmm...learn new things all the time.

That hole in the upper column looks like someone removed the stub for the shift lever as I have seen on true column shift cars converted to floor shifts.

so let me get the right... these cars came with floor shift the columns were converted at the factory???

All 70 columns had the hole that mimics a column shift, but were in fact all floor shift cars. My guess would be that all Ford cars used the same lower column ring regardless of being a floor or column shift, to simplify manufacturing. A true column shift would have brackets for the shift linkage that runs down the column towards the firewall.

did 70 mustangs have the capability of locking the shifter when the key was off? if so, that is why the column shift linkage, since 70 had the key on the column if the shifter was in gear ,you could not turn the key to the lock position & could not take it out of gear when key was locked.

if that is not the case, it still makes sense that ford used the same column since it was easier for production. the 70 column was a first year thing 69 di not have the key in the column

Yes they did, which is the reason for the lockout rod shown in his second pick. That rod isn't a shifter rod, it's a lockout rod for the column. When the car is in park, the steering wheel is locked (via lockout rod that is connected to the transmission) and you cannot turn it. Put the car in any other gear and you can turn the wheel.
