Coil Covers ?

I have my front coil covers off while I am replace the front suspension. I am contemplating leaving them off unless someone can tell me why they have to be on. I just do not see the need.

Strenght to the inner fenders for one, helps for deflection on the shock towers and
Keeps the spring from collecting debris.
 
I agree, they add to the rigidity of the tower. I wouldn't leave them off. In fact, I've seen where some guys have added gussets from them to the firewall area for extra strength.

A close friend of mine road races his car with them removed. His car is as stiff as they come. He runs a shaft mounted bumpstop on our coilover system which is all I see this stock piece as being - a place to mount the bumpstop.

I think that is a good idea if tied into the interior roll cage. Sort of like a fender side Export Brace...
 
Another mod for stiffening things up is to remove the cover and use a cover similar to the Boss 429 cars, which tie it to the outer cowls......if you are into stiffening things up that is
