Checking fuel tank?

OK. One last (hopefully) question: When the new tank comes, is it okay to install the fuel sender and then fill about 3/4 with water to check for leaks while sitting on the bench? I also plan to set the fuel gauge (ohm correctly)? I remember Craig or someone on here talking about this, but can't seem to find it in a search or the tutorials? The tank will have a drain plug so it should be easy to drain before installation.

Nice to check for leaks but I never have.....never had one leak anywhere but at the drain plug and that was not mine.

As for setting the gauge, matching the angle of the tank when in the car will need to be done.

I'm with Pete. See no real reason to do a leak test but if you want to go through the exercise for a piece of mind, I can see doing it. Just be sure to dry the tank out real good before you put fuel in it.

When do you envision getting your tank? Maybe I need to get off my butt and turn my sending unit fixture into one which others can use with ease. What size tank are you installing?

+2, no need to fill with water. Instead, after installing I would put in a gallon or two of petrol, fire it up, then let it sit overnight. Next day fill to 1/2, wait again, then check for leaks.

The tank should be here in a couple of days. It's the 16 gallon. I don't feel like doing any modifying right now...lol That would be a good tutorial on the sender.

I fooled with trying to get the sender to seal on the other tank until I was pissing gasoline. Just tired of getting in it and smelling like it. I know it's easier to do with the tank out so I am installing sender on the bench and then testing for leakage...you know that stuff that midlife has to wear the diaper for...lol :roll These tanks aren't baffled are they? Should be no problem getting the water back out.

I might do that with the gas and then let it sit tipped over so if it leaks it will be at the sender unit seal. I can just slip a short pieces of hose on the fuel nipple and stick a bolt in the end so it won't leak.

Very rare have I heard of anyone having a leakage issue at the sending unit, if installed properly. Just sayin'.

Guess I am the "rare idiot", in the class... :bowdown
I don't think there will be a problem installing on the bench as I did do this some years ago when the original tank was replaced and had no problem then. As you mentioned awhile back, it's a much easier procedure with the tank out. But you know...Every since Randy got his hallowed hands on my poor stang, it has never been the same. :char Seems like the smsallest things turn into a big cluster you know what! :roul

It Depends upon what diaper I wear...

Just a follow up. It is so much easier to install the fuel sender with the tank sitting on the work bench. Then installed the tank and no leaks! :yah
Thanks to everyone for help on this. :wor
