I am installing my sending unit before I drop the new tank in......Is it ok to glue the o ring in place? As soon as I drop the sending unit on top of it, it rolls out of place. or is there a trick to this that I am missing?

I have a fuel cell so I have zero to add or help, but I sure thought this thread was about something else entirely :amaz

Got my attention, but then again, that's not saying much :lol

WOO HOO! finally one I know!

Just put a VERY THIN skim of black silicon on the oring. Set it where it goes and let it cure for a few minutes. Then drop the sending unit on top of it, and finally install the locking ring.

Make sure you tighten the locking ring as far as it can possibly turn...you don't want it to leak!

OK Steve, you beat me to it but I'm still gonna post my answer. I thought it was appropriate.

Use a little, VERY LITTLE, rtv or something similar to hold it in place while you slide your unit into the hole.

I looked to see where this was posted, and thought this is in the wrong forum. Then I read

Now I know this may be in the wrong forum. :lol

Thanks for all the help. I sliced the crap out of my finger in the hole. Should have used protection.

You're doing it wrong.

Wait are we still talking about fuel tanks?

Back to being serious....
I coat the o-ring with a film of petroleum jelly. It holds it in place in the groove until you put the sender in and lubricates it in case you need to move things around.

Man...that didn't sound like I was being serious did it?

+1, for the freakin trouble the cause, its almost worth pulling the tank and doing it on the workbench, you still wanna use protection. And if you use any toys, errr I mean tools, make sure they are brass so they do not spark

The tank is new and not yet installed as is the sending unit.
I should have posted this on our facebook page, then I could have become a fan of vaseline.

LOL what I'm about to say is gonna refer back to the thread title, but i'm being serious.

I considered the petroleum jelly thing, but decided against it, and here's why. It is HIGHLY recommended to NEVER use Petroleum Jelly with a condom, because petroleum jelly weakens and damages rubber, and will increase the chances of condom breakage. The jelly can chemically affect the rubber. That's why I decided to avoid it.

However, I think enough people use it that it can't be that bad...just being cautious.

I'm gonna go with a dab of RTV because i have more experience using that than the vaseline (or lotion for that matter). What did you use to seal the tank to the trunk, seam sealer or am I cool with RTV? Mustangs Unlimited omitted my bolt kit so I won't be bolting the tank in for a day or two.

Get Strip Caulk. Mustangs Unlimited carries it if you didn't re-order the bolt kit yet.

Napa carries it otherwise. That's where i got mine. I got WAY more than I'll use in a lifetime, so if you want I'll just mail some to you(But it won't go out til monday)

Don't use oil based lube it might fail and you'll end up with 9 months of bitching and a lifetime of monetary losses!

Hehehehe

Really though, what they said about the RTV.
