For those that care....

Governor Jerry Brown signed into law legislation (A.B. 1658) to establish the California Legacy License Plate Program. Under the new law, the DMV will create and issue a series of specialized license plates that replicate plates from the state's past. Previously, classic car owners could only revive well-maintained old plates that match the vintage of their vehicle. Among other things, the new law will bring a retro look to modern license plates by allowing consumers to choose from one of three classic designs from the 1950s-1960s (black lettering on yellow background or yellow lettering on black background) and 1970s-1980s (yellow lettering on blue background). The law requires that at least 7,500 applications for any one particular plate must be received by the DMV on or before January 1, 2015.

I don't like it! It degrades the origplates and their value! Sounds like some disgruntled legislature wrote a law to help himself with his hot rod. Just issue vintage plates like the rest of the country.

At first the idea sounds cool, but I agree that it takes away from the real YOM plates.

The YOM program already takes away from the "black plate" mystique as anyone who can find a clean set of black plates can pay the fees to have them assigned to a recent import from anywhere including the rust belt. What this means is that the mere presence of black plates is no longer enough to give a car provenance. The smart buyers will be asking to see the original 1960's vintage California registration card for that car as corroborating evidence of an original California registered car.

Honestly it gives the state revenue for what many are already doing with the YOM and repro plates, including me.

If you think that way. Then all repro parts should be taken off the market. Also, any clones.
