Buyigng a used T5z??

Our neighborhood project '88 5.0LX needs a transmission, bad. I found a used T5z on Corral.net in Tulsa. Dude said he bought it used from Corral about a year ago, but when I searched, the only T5 he's bought on there was a regular 5.0 Mustang WC T5. Guy does look legit, 28 feedbacks and a 7 year member of corral, but? Good news is he only wants $600 + shipping for shifter, trans, bell, and alum. flywheel.

Bad news is UPS wants $175 to send a crate with a return tag. That and my theory that people don't know a Jeep T5 from a T5z (or a swift kick to the arse)

What would Brian Boitano (or stangfix) do?

According to that link it appears he can get you a 052 Cluster set trans for $600 rebuilt, assuming I'm reading that. If you need the better 068 cluster it'll be an extra $100.

Crap, he doesn't take 2.3 4cyl T5s as cores.

Astro Performance is looking like the best option outside of a used unit. Astro wants $1140 for a rebuild without bell or shifter, including clutch kit and freight, and he'll give a $250 credit for a good 2.3 core.

I'll keep him in mind...this is the 3rd T5 I've almost bought, so I might talk to the ebay guy, who knows at this rate. :lol

I'm still pissed that I missed out on an $1000 Astro A-5 :lol

Talked to my buddy that owns the car...he's now shooting for 375hp and a pair of slicks...gonna need all the trans we can get. :lol

$900 to rebuild? these things are pretty easy to overhaul.... you can get all the stuff (minus synchros) for under $300 last I knew.
What kind of mods are in the '88 that needs a Z spec?

It was a 4cyl car originally, so we're sorta stuck buying a rebuilt or gutting it and buying V8 internals. Astro's T5 & clutch is $900 with core credit, or I can spend $900 on T5z guts and a clutch.

He's getting ported GT40Ps and a ported Cobra intake, a cam, and headers, should put out a fair amount of hp, I hope it doesn't kill T5s, hehe.

If the tag says it's a Z, all I can do is take his word for it. Worst comes to worst, Visa and Paypal have pretty good fraud protection.

If that's the case forget the 052 or 068 clusters. Astro or GForce would be the way to go IMO ........or a TKO500/600 or T56 :lol
 
It is really a crap shoot buying a used transmission unless it comes from a trusted source.

They can say it is good but their definition of "good" may not be good enough.

Or they just don't know.

Just heard back from the guy and there is no tag. That plus the fact that the only T5 he bought was a regular V8 WC unit is enough to scare me.

5 bucks says it's not really a T5z. :lol
 
Update: Found another lightly used T5z for $600, this time with proof and a tag#. Too bad I found out it was for-real about 10mins after I found out that we cain't even afford a trip to McDonalds suddenly. Damn IRS.
