Arrowhead Stadium, 49 plane flyover

At Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday....As you know the budget cuts have
eliminated the military flyovers at large events. Well, there's a group of guys in
Kansas City who do some formation flying in their own planes and that
decided they'd volunteer to pick up the slack. They invited a couple of other
groups to join them and before they knew it they had 48 guys with their
homemade RV airplanes signing up to join in. If they had more time, they
probably would have gotten an even larger group as people kept joining and a
49th was added near the event. One additional feature of the flyover was the
use of pink smoke for cancer awareness. The folks from the Guinness Book
where there and are expected to confirm it as the largest formation flight
ever. And to top it off the crowd later set the record for the loudest
gathering at a football stadium.

I would have thought a bigger formation may have been flown during WWII. Nevertheless, a wonderful moment!

I was there. When the camera looks toward the opposite endzone, I was sitting in the lower level - about even with the top of the right side of the goalpost. Wife & youngest daughter were there too.

It was one of "those moments" we'll always remember... :yah

And yes, Arrowhead was LOUD. I had earplugs, and still had a headache for 2 days.

From our seats 45 minutes before gametime:

There were bigger gatherings with multiple formations but ONE formation with 49 planes is a bit large and very dangerous. Those guys must have practiced or really trusted each other.

From riding motorcycles in exhibition formations, once one can do formation riding, the size of the group is no big deal. Now, getting that many together that trust each other....and that is a must....makes it something else for sure. This was how a fighter pilot that also rode Gold Wings with us explained formation performance.

Just putting that many planes in a formation is a huge undertaking and I'd say for formation of civilian planes it is a world record. Hats off to those that done it. :nwort

If you haven't actually flown a aircraft comparing it to motorcycle formation riding isn't very accurate. Many more factors involved.

As I said....that was the way a pilot described it....and he rode with us and had flown formations also.... I realize they are not the same.
