65 Painting Doofus

Some of you know I have spent the last three months in and out of the hospital and have been blessed to win my fight with colon cancer. During the times off work I have had the opportunity to work on the Mustang (Pain Permitting) I finally got to some of the paint again (the hood I have painted three times) Well... I am a very anal person and for those of you that have not done your own painting there is a LOT of prep work and days and days and days of more prep work. The stencils I made my self here and I guess because of all the issues I have been dealing with I made a Homer Simpson doofus. I don"t mind sharing with you because I had to laugh about it. I did not see it until I went to mail the photo to my brother. LOL You can also see to the far right by the vent a blue line that does not match... that was simply some tape I did not peal off prior to the photo. The fix to the mistake is going to be easy thank goodness.

Only one coat of clear here and a LOT more work to go. I hope you like my own little creative work

First , i am gladd to hear everything is ok with you.!!
We all know how cancer affects everybody in differents ways.
Second , laughing with that mistake ,shows that you right on track. There is alot more important stuff that a dot missing on a hood !!!
Keep up the good work and keep smiling !!!

I dot that anyone else would notice but you period. :craz Good to see that you are in good humor about it. :lol Now after seeing your hood did Shelby inspire you or did you inspire them?

Really nice work btw. fd

I had to change the blue color because the guardsman just did not look good to me. The second blue I bought I tested it first... Duh and it looked to dull as well. So the third blue I had made I just opened the book and took it out in the sun and picked the brightest blue with metallic I liked.

So..... watching the Daytona 500 did indeed catch my eye. I wanted to copy it but I could not do it with the smaller hood scoop, the white stripe did not want to play well. So I made the stencil (not easy, not easy at all to make) and placed it on the hood , moved it here and there and could have done that game all day so I just committed to a spot and did the best I could to match the other side. Now the car has my own character , no one will ever think I am copying the old gt350

....now they will think I am copying they new one LOLOLOL, actually I am, I love the look and so does my wife. The HP makes it mine and I will be flattered if I see others doing it. The motor is 350HP so I kinda like how the whole thing turned out. Thanks to the 2011 for the idea.

Hey Mark, I too am planning on doing my own paint, wondering what you found to be the most useful as far as sanding boards go? std wood long board, durablocks, or those fairly expensive flexible sanding boards (witht the rods you add to change the flex)? I have a set of the durablocks...

what did you use? what is essential?

I'll have to check, but I swear I have a hotwheels mustang at the house in the same color scheme with the H.P. 350 on the hood. I was thinking thats what influenced your paint scheme.

Glad to hear the cancer situation is going well. I wonder how many people are gonna ask if you have a "high performace 350" in that car? You know some idiot is gonna tell you that a ford engine is a 351 and a 350 is a chevy engine. Nice job.

Thanks Duane, I am sure to get the "I had one just like your 350 stroker from the factory"

Rick if you find a model like this I WILL BUY IT . That would be so cool. I saw the 2011 and Lu...uved the look of the numbers on the hood. I am so so glad I did it because of the constant yick yak about how my car is not a "real" GT350 because of this or that . I hope this will clearly make it be a "MOD" If I get much rigumaroe about Shelby stuff I will change the side GT to HP as well.

As far as supplies go for the sanding part and block. I used a 1/2 inch x 2 1/2 inch x 12 inch wood block. Mostly one of those rubber things with the two holding nails on each end from 3M i think.

Crappy old rusty compressor
Harbor Freight HVLP gun
GOOD mask and filters, cover up.
in line vapor filter
Plastic tape for the lines , paper tape for the rest

remember to use the mask when mixing too

papers were mostly 220 then 400, this was all that is necessary to provide a surface that the base hold good too and the clear can glass upon the base . I have found ...for me.... because of my own trial and errors that getting down the clear is a mater of little at a time, it can be dusty , or shiny or striped with both. Each layer can fix the prior but most of all the show shine is done later with fine paper, and a 2 step buffing. I am letting time go by and will do the color sanding (expression) small parts at a time as I drive the car finally. It is AMAZING how mirror like the last step is and it is that step that make the car awesome 1 foot away. without the last step it is reasonably fine 5 feet away.

If you can use a rattle can then you will think the gun a dream.
my gun cost 30 bucks or so , the result is in the adjustment and movement and your eyes.
