65 Fastback Hood Scoop

Greetings all. Fairly new here. I've got a 1965 Fastback quasi GT350(H)* clone. I'm looking to put a hood scoop on it but want something more aggressive than the standard GT350 scoop. I'm leaning toward the 69 Boss 429. Has anyone seen this combo before? Are there any other scoops that you've seen that look cool? I'm definitely not going to make the scoop forced air, but I am considering ram air engine compartment cooling.

- I plan to reprint the striping to make it the same titanium color as the mags on my wheels.
- I'm not a purist, I want my car to be unique. But i don't want it to be a slap in the face to tradition.
- * the H drives me bananas. They didn't have a GT350H in 65, so I am getting rid of that!

Don't go too crazy with the scope style.
You have a very nice looking car.:cool:
Red with gold....I like that.;)
 
On these cars, in terms of modifications, it's a matter for personal taste. The thing is with the 65/66 models Ford did such an excellent job on styling much of a departure from the norm looks...well, tacky usually. A big old Boss 9 scoop, IMHO, would not look good. The standard Shelby scoop or the swapping over to a '67 Shelby style hood, while not unique, doesn't clash and adds to the overall appearance. My two cents.

Thanks! I really kind of lucked into the car.

Yeah - that's exactly what I'm looking for. Don't want tacky, but don't want ubiquitous. I'll check out the 67/68s.

I'm just having a hard time finding images of unique hoods on the 65/66.
 
Our current COTM (Although a month behind!) has the hood I mention. Here is a pic of the same on the wall in my garage!hood.jpg
 
Later models are wider. Your narrower car will make that scoop look much taller and over-sized.

What he said. I along with the others I think that a Boss 429 scoop would be WAY out of scale for your fastback. I've also seen '67-68s with a shaker scoop. Doesn't look good. All out of scale proportionately.

Agree with you on the "H" though. But that red with gold is more unique than you think. I like it. Just get the stripes sans "H" redone and add a proper year scoop.
 
That picture of the black boss shows how perfect that scoop looks on a 69, the pictures below show how wrong that scoop looks on the earlier cars....

Funny thing is, the blue one doesn't look too bad. The last picture looks absolutely atrocious! Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't seem to dig up any pics of that combo.
So, with that being said - are there any aftermarket scoops that have the aggressiveness of the boss look with the proper proportionality for the 65/66? I personally (as does the wife, and that actually matters) think the 65 Shelby scoop is too small.
05-09 scoops perhaps?

I think what you first have to tackle is how you want to go about adding a scoop. Will it be grafted to the existing hood? Thinking of going with a whole new hood? Steel or fiberglass? Will you be doing the work yourself or hiring it out?

If you elect to go scoop addition to existing and hire the work out I would wager you will be shocked at the cost quoted. You also need to consider how a scoop would be physically connected to your hood as it is very common to have cracking and such far too soon. Be very careful of who you get to do the work and fully understand how the work will be done.

Going full on new hood with integral scoop solves some issues as it saves labor of grafting, etc. but you still have the choice of steel or 'glass. Steel can be made to fit well whereas 'glass almost always has some issues. You can spend a fortune here as well in labor working to get that hood aligned. Problem with steel is outside a stock Shelby style try and find other options outside of custom creation.

Point I am trying to make is this will be a costly endeavor whichever way you go. Not the kind of thing you want have to do over if the end result isn't too your liking. Even if you do it all yourself, it can still cost a fair bit of both cash and time.
 
Currently I have a steel hood. I know it'll cost, but I want it to look finished. Without the scoop, it drives me nuts.

I've seen the Cobra Jet/Mach 1 scoop on the early cars and think it looks pretty nice. It is way smaller than the Boss scoop and a little larger than the GT 350 scoop. It has the vintage look and the right proportions. Also it looks right as a bolt-on which would save you a lot of work ($$$).

That green thing that Ryan posted is a prime example of what not to do to an early car. What looks like could be a very sharp ride is, in my opinion, trashed with the addition of that rear wing and over-sized chin spoiler. Cleaning up the front grill only to add that Ford emblem seems counter-productive as well. That running horse in the lower apron grill is a nice touch. *sarcasm*

Back to the scoop, it looks much better on the black car without the inside grill work. Still not as good as the stock Shelby. His exhaust makes up for it, though.:eek::oops::confused:
 
I agree with Terry. I had thoughts of putting the 69 scoop on my 65 but when I set it on the hood and stepped back, it didn't look right for the lines on the earlier cars. I ended up getting the Shelby bolt on scoop and modifying it. I thought it was too small, so we split it and widened it and opened the front up a bit. It will be painted the color of the stripe when we get to that point.
